The Office of Institutional Research and Planning (IRP) at Queen’s University is seeking a collaborative and analytical individual for the position of Research & Planning Analyst. Reporting to the Assistant Director, IRP, the Research & Planning Analyst works as part of a team to provide analytical, research and project management support to the university for the purpose of strategic policy development, institutional planning and decision making at the university. The team is constantly researching data to answer questions that may not have been asked in the past, so it is important that the Research & Planning Analyst is able to solve complex problems in a collaborative manner. Additionally, Queen’s University’s students, faculty and staff are diverse and have needs that are change, therefor the IRP team also needs embrace change and design research that is inclusive of a broad range of perspectives.
The IRP team is at the heart of decision making at Queen’s University, and has a direct impact on the student experience and bottom line of the institution. • Follow professional standards in the handling and reporting of highly confidential and sensitive information.
• Develop, organize, and maintain datasets and databases that serve as the master data record for strategic analyses, including integrating data, monitoring data integrity, and standardizing data elements and definitions.
• Recommend changes to methods and projects to improve data integrity and quality or improve processes.
• Monitor changes to applications and systems related to assigned projects and ensure updates and changes to any applications meet data collection and reporting needs.
• Support the development of planning processes, techniques and practices and participate in institutional planning activities.
• Undertake research and analysis projects with practical support and supervision.
• Collect, clean and merge data from central administrative systems (PeopleSoft, Relational Databases) survey response files, other universities and university consortia and government agencies into data sets maintained by OIRP.
• Develop, test, implement, maintain and document code for projects and analyses using various statistical programming languages: R, SAS, SPSS, Python.
• Develop, test, implement and maintain data-driven reports and data products using Tableau.
• Build and maintain contacts with research and analysis clients and colleagues, including university administration, committees, other universities and government agencies.
• Use and leverage central administrative computing systems to validate central data and identify data improvement opportunities, and participate in the implementation of prominent system improvements.
• Prepare data submissions, proposals, reports and presentations to communicate research findings within and outside the university community.
• Promote a culture that supports diversity, equity, inclusion and Indigeneity in the workplace and acknowledge diverse ideas and the interests of all stakeholders in decision making.
• Undertake other duties in support of the unit as required.
• An undergraduate degree in a discipline or professional program involving statistics, research methodology and statistical computing.
• A minimum of three years of experience (or a combination of education and experience) with exposure to and familiarity with applied research, statistical/analytical software, mainframe administrative systems, database systems, and research design/project management.
• Experience with various analytical tools in support of information analysis and reporting, such as SAS, R, PeopleSoft Query, Excel, Tableau and other appropriate software and improvements as technologies evolve.
• Familiarity with SQL or query writing with PeopleSoft or another enterprise system.
• Familiarity with strategies for improving processes – eliminating or consolidating process steps, reducing elapsed time and eliminating waste.
• An ability to quickly acquire knowledge of complex administrative structures and processes.
• Experience working with diverse groups, projects, and applications to identify and bring together multiple information sources in a clear, consistent, valid and understandable format.
• Project coordination experience considered an asset.
• Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Demonstrated analytical, research and problem-solving skills, with an ability to interpret, synthesize and communicate complex data/information and make recommendations.
• Proactive, self motivated, resourceful, and results driven, with the ability to work independently or in a team environment.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills including project/program documentation, technical presentation and reporting writing.
• Curiosity and initiative to search out new data sources, analysis methods and applications.
• Sound judgment and discretion when dealing with sensitive and confidential information.

• Allocate time, prioritize tasks and determine workflow to meet expectations and conflicting deadlines.
• Determine when decisions and recommendations should be referred to the AD.
