Western’s Residences are a self-funded ancillary within the Division of Housing and Ancillary Services, with annual revenues in excess of $65 million and a staff of 60 full-time and more than 200 student employees. The nine Residences are occupied by students and fully operational throughout the academic year on a 24/7 basis. Western’s rental accommodations are comprised of: 2 apartment buildings, 19 three-story walk up apartment buildings and 170 townhouses, with annual revenues of $10,821,200, with 900 leases.
The Director of Housing is responsible for leading the on-campus residence life program and overseeing management of rental accommodations owned by Western. The Director will ensure that safe and supportive educational and social settings are created across the housing system, which accommodates 5,300 students in nine residences and 2,000 tenants across Western’s rental accommodations. The Director will provide leadership related to the vision of recruitment and admission strategies within the residences and Western apartments, ensuring alignment with Western’s overall recruitment goals and divisional occupancy targets. The incumbent will strive to achieve strong and continued student engagement and scholarship, while integrating housing operations and programs within the vision and goals of the portfolio and the University.
As a member of the unit’s senior leadership team, the incumbent works in collaboration with other divisional leaders to determine the strategic vision and direction of the portfolio, to develop policies, and to deliver on the objectives of the unit. The Director will ensure that Housing and Ancillary Services (HAS) is well positioned to support Western in achieving its strategic goals, and that highly efficient, client-focused and responsive services are delivered to the University’s housing community.
- Graduate Degree from an accredited institution in higher education administration, student affairs, counseling, business or related field
- 10 years of progressively responsible experience in a University setting
- Experience developing and managing budgets
- Experience leading project teams and staff
- Experience providing leadership in a complex organization
- Experience in residence life/student affairs providing both strategic and operational leadership is preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of the technology and trends within university settings, particularly the field of student services and housing
- Strong problem solving skills with an ability to provide solutions using a consultative and collaborative approach to addressing issues and opportunities
- Proven budgetary and contract management skills
- Conflict management and negotiation skills
- Ability to develop relationships and work collaboratively with diverse staff, senior administration, faculty, and students
- Client service skills with an ability to apply tact and diplomacy when dealing with sensitive issues and a range of personalities, motives and interests
- Openness to recognize when change is necessary, and to develop, implement and lead effective change management strategies
- Compelling and persuasive communication skills to engage individuals and teams inside and outside the University
