The Opportunity

The Director of Native/Tribal Partnerships will deepen the organization’ engagement with and understanding of Tribal/Native communities facing food insecurity, serve as the internal subject matter expert and resource leader to provide added capacity and expertise on the concerns, unique challenges and experiences of Native and Tribal communities, ensure that Feeding America’s  Native American strategy is elevated and incorporated into the network and national office through its systems, tools, policies, structures, and practices, and serve as a member of the Equity and Programs Leadership Team.


  • Identify and Develop Culturally Responsive Programs and Services: In collaboration with Native American stakeholders , the Chief Equity & Programs Officer, and the National Council, the Director will lead the development of a network-wide culturally-sensitive and appropriate strategy and plan for Native/Tribal communities and populations disproportionately impacted by food insecurity.  Working with FANO and network partners, lead the development and implementation of appropriate infrastructure (i.e. department, advisory, learning communities, performance management/accountability systems) to ensure effective development and execution of equity and inclusion strategies to support these efforts. 
  • Partnership Development: With Native American Partners at the center, build short and long-term goals to address food insecurity in tribal communities. Identify and establish authentic Native American Partners that can advise and guide our Native American Strategy.
  • Serve as Trusted Advisor and Resource Partner to Colleagues: Support and advocate for an equitable and inclusive workplace, incorporating feedback from teammates.  Participate in long-term planning, strategy development, goal setting, and work plan management that advances a collective vision for Tribal Partnerships.  Work with others across the organization (e.g., Communication/Marketing, Supply Chain, Government Relations, Research, etc.) to create an environment that facilitates productive dialogue about disparities and their root causes that lays a foundation for action using an equity analysis and/or framework.
  • Capacity Development and Training: Build and lead discussions cross functionally and within the Network that will help to put solid metrics behind the goals of this position. Lead the development and implementation of programs and processes to build knowledge, skill and competency around Native/Tribal communities for Network members and FANO staff.  This may include design and delivery of training programs as well as managing relationships with external partners as needed to deliver training and support to achieve our plan. 
  • Communication & Progress Monitoring: Develop consistent communication and feedback mechanisms to ensure our ability to identify, discuss, and address equity issues impacting Native Americans facing hunger, the network, and staff. Develop communication systems to share best practices, highlight bright spots, and keep staff and food banks apprised of key initiatives and activities impacting Native/Tribal communities.  Develop network-wide feedback loops and systems to collect input, analyze data (both qualitative and quantitative), and share progress.
  • Travel: Frequent (20 - 40%).

Required Technical Competencies, Experience, Certifications, &

  • Five years of experience leading the development and implementation of Native/Indigenous engagements with tribal communities, advocacy, program, or projects is required.
  • Experience, including formal education, ideally in Native/Indigenous studies, Community Outreach, other social impact related discipline is required or equivalent experience working in tribal communities with an understanding of Native American food systems, culture, and tribal governance.
  • Significant experience in leadership roles working within complex operating environment – ideally a network and/or matrixed structure.
  • Excellent training and facilitation skills with proven track record of successful design and delivery of formal and informal training, working groups such as communities of practice and speaking and presenting with key stakeholders in other forums such as conferences.
