The Faculty of Health, the School of Global Health (SGH) and the Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research at York University invite applications from outstanding researchers for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Global Health and Humanitarianism. The successful candidate will be appointed as tenure-track or tenured faculty at the Assistant or Associate level. Applicants will have a PhD or equivalent JD or MD or equivalent (with research qualifications) in Global Health or a related discipline. They will bring a critical problem-solving social science research lens to contemporary issues in global health and humanitarianism with a view to excellence in knowledge creation that enhances equity and effectiveness in global health and humanitarian policy and practice.
Multiple fields in the social sciences including political science, history and philosophy, are central to illuminating past and present conceptions and practices in global health and humanitarianism, and to contributing to the redefinition of contemporary and future approaches to policy and practice. The global governance challenges of the 21st Century, the rise of an illiberal political culture, crises of the global commons such as climate warming, food insecurity, entrenched inequity and poverty, digital governance or pandemic disease, each and together pose challenges to the policies and practices of global health and humanitarianism. The successful candidate will demonstrate evidence of research excellence or promise of research excellence of a recognized international caliber. While we are interested in all areas of global health and humanitarianism, preference will be given to the following thematic areas:
- The history of state-civil society relations and colonization that shape contemporary and future global health and humanitarian structures and functions (e.g., relations with Indigenous peoples; the ideational language and law of global health and human rights, refugee and international humanitarian law; the health and humanitarian duties and responsibilities of states versus civil society in disaster or war; the relationship between humanitarian relief and development - including the question of whether foreign aid is a necessity or an act of benevolence; in contexts of state failure where a governance vacuum emerges, and humanitarianism becomes a substitute for public policy, etc.);
- Contemporary challenges of the global commons that amplify or prevail to impose inequitable burdens on those most at risk of health and humanitarian impacts (e.g., of climate warming, ecological degradation, antimicrobial resistance, changing patterns of chronic disease, emerging re-emerging and pandemic infectious diseases, regions of conflict or state instability, and the growing challenges of global food security and of global poverty, etc.);
- The governance and ethics of data, digital systems and the use of big data, analytics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning that in global health and humanitarian disaster settings are emergent in cross-jurisdictional or cross-border contexts, in unregulated health contexts, and in crisis or humanitarian settings. For example, frameworks and guidelines for the governance, ethical development and use of artificial intelligence-based tools and digital platforms in humanitarian settings are at an early stage, and yet biases in data sets and their associated AI applications, and ethical and governance risks to health data sharing, meta data, privacy, security, and encryption must be meaningfully confronted in practice.
The primary appointment and teaching responsibility will be in the School of Global Health (SGH) at York University (see: https://globalhealth.yorku.ca), and will be in line with the Faculty of Health’s vision and mission of conducting research that addresses health at all levels, including global health, and the health of individuals and populations. Recognizing the trans-disciplinarity of global health, we encourage and support opportunities for collaboration including support for graduate supervision and research partnerships in other Faculties. The newly launched SGH at York University has an established undergraduate global health degree program (BA and BSc), and will be launching its global health PhD program in 2023. The SGH has research alliances and student placements with research institutes and centres, teaching hospitals, public health and community health agencies, as well as with professional health associations, government ministries in Canada and internationally and with non-government organizations and multilateral organizations.
The successful candidate will also be a Faculty Fellow at the York University Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research (See: https://www.yorku.ca/dighr/); will receive a competitive research support package and will participate in and build transdisciplinary and collegial approaches to Dahdaleh Institute-based globally networked research teams. The Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research is a university-wide Organized Research Unit, and seeks to enhance effectiveness, equity, and excellence in global health research through a critical problem-solving approach to 21st Century challenges. Its three thematic research areas are: 1) Planetary Health; 2) Global Health and Humanitarianism, and 3) Global Health Foresighting. Research is broadly conceived as knowledge creation that informs policy and practice relevant to these themes. The Dahdaleh Institute uses experimental and experiential methods and is recognized for its collaborative and trans-disciplinary research and leadership in fostering a new generation of global health scholars and practitioners. The Dahdaleh Institute has established research partnerships of international scope with York University’s Centre for Refugee Studies, Centre for Disease Modelling, the Advanced Disaster and Emergency Disease Modelling and Simulation Centre (ADERSIM), the Lassonde School of Engineering, the Faculty of Education, and the Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a critical social science problem-solving perspective and will be able to contribute to a variety of complementary research areas relevant to global health and humanitarianism throughout their career. As an emerging leader in their field, the CRC will provide a focus for research partnership, collaboration and growth with national and international non-government, government and multilateral stakeholders in global health and humanitarianism, and demonstrate an outstanding (or potential for outstanding) record of external research funding. Candidates engaged with practitioners and policy makers and their organizations on contemporary research challenges are strongly preferred.
In line with York University’s commitment to equity and social justice, this position will provide support for York University’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals; its role as the first Canadian UN CIFAL Center for training and research; its university-wide initiative on Disaster Risk Governance and Disaster and Health Emergency Management, and its Strategic Research Plan priorities. These include 1) Exploring and Interrogating the Frontiers of Science and Technology; 2) Building Healthy Lives, Communities and Environments, and 3) Advancing Fundamental Inquiry and Critical Knowledge. It will also foster and support further collaboration and growth of existing University research clusters relevant to global health and humanitarianism.
Guidelines for the Preparation of Applications
As part of their application, candidates are expected to present a detailed research statement that sets out their plans and ideas for the first five years of their tenure as a CRC holder. Candidates are asked to make the case for why and how their own research agenda is of crucial importance to the future evolution of the area of global health and humanitarianism at the SGH. Particular attention should be paid to how the candidate anticipates fostering academic and community-based collaborative initiatives within the School, Faculty, and beyond. The CRC is expected to seek grants to support their research from relevant external funding agencies, and this expectation should also be addressed in their research agenda. Candidates will provide evidence of research excellence or promise of research excellence of a recognized international calibre as demonstrated in: their research statement; a record of publications in globally significant scholarly journals in the field; presentations at major international conferences; awards, and strong recommendations from referees of high standing.
Candidates must also provide evidence of, or promise of, teaching excellence aligned with their research, explicitly focused on methods and applications of critical social science problem solving perspectives on policy and practice in global health and humanitarianism. The successful candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Excellence or potential for excellence in teaching, course design, innovative pedagogy, experiential learning, and/or student mentorship is expected. Preference will be given to those with experience and excellence in supervising and mentoring graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and/or the potential to attract, develop, and retain excellent students and future researchers, while contributing to curricular development in their area of specialization. Evidence of excellence, or potential for excellence, in teaching will be demonstrated through the teaching statement, teaching accomplishments, pedagogical innovations, teaching evaluations, and/or strong letters of reference. In particular, we are interested in teaching excellence around our high priority areas, such as experiential education and technology-enhanced learning.
Canada Research Chair Program Eligibility Criteria
The Canada Research Chairs program seeks to attract outstanding researchers for careers at Canadian universities. Appointment to a Tier 2 Chair is for five years, renewable once, and comes with enhanced research support from the program. Tier 2 Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., those who, at the time of nomination, are within 10 years of reaching their highest degree, with consideration for career breaks). Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process. The successful candidate will work with the Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research, the Faculty of Health and the Office of the Vice-President Research and Innovation to prepare the formal CRC nomination package for submission at the earliest possible date.
