POSITION SUMMARY

A new role, the Manager, Government and Stakeholder Relations will be responsible for implementing government and stakeholder relations initiatives in support of Vector’s vision and in alignment with Vector’s broader marketing, communications, and thought leadership agenda.

Working closely with the Vector leadership team and workstream leaders, the Manager, Government and Stakeholder Relations ensures the integration and coordination of stakeholder relations and activities in support of Vector’s reputation and position in the innovation ecosystem. They are also responsible for providing strategic advice, governance support, and operational direction to achieve effective and efficient government relations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Government Relations

  • Provide expertise and leadership in government engagement as well as develop and nurture strategic relationships for Vector within key areas of the federal, provincial, and municipal governments and related innovation ecosystem partners
  • Plan, develop, and implement engagement strategies; facilitate an integrated approach to the development and integration of government and institutional engagement
  • Represent Vector with various external groups and organizations as required, and provide written reports on these and other activities as requested
  • Act as a resource to governments and institutions to connect with Vector on policy advice, program development, and strategic implementation
  • Directly influence funding relationships for Vector e.g., developing and facilitating major proposals, meetings and discussions for funding of current Vector activities, or building new programs aligned with both government and Vector priorities
  • Supporting Vector’s leadership team in preparation for governmental and institutional meetings with briefing notes, presentation decks, and program materials
  • Supporting Vector on policy activities and elevating those opportunities that could result in thought leadership opportunities
  • Help define opportunities for Vector to interact with governments and institutions in a meaningful and pro-active way 
  • In collaboration with agencies and Vector’s Marketing & Communications workstream to reach government through journals/outlets they frequent and educate the market on Vector’s impact on AI in Ontario and Canada more broadly
  • Help governments and institutions develop a keener understanding of the vital importance of AI application and broader AI adoption, the forces driving it, and the massive role forward-looking businesses across Canada must adopt to thrive in the knowledge economy
  • In collaboration with other members of the Marketing & Communications workstream, develop and communicate a compelling narrative around Vector’s impact in driving progress across the AI ecosystem in both Canada and globally

KEY SUCCESS MEASURES 

  • Vector develops meaningful relationships with government and institutional stakeholders resulting in frequent meetings, requests for input on policies, frameworks, and other such matters
  • Emerging contentious issues and reputational risks are properly identified and proactively mitigated with government stakeholders
  • Initiatives are well-planned and coordinated across programs, optimizing efforts for both maximum visibility and engagement with government and stakeholders
  • All internal and external stakeholders are aware of and engaged in upcoming government and institutional relation activities as necessary
  • Increased meetings with funding partners, either decision makers or influencers, in the lead up to various funding deadlines
  • A material increase in familiarity of Vector’s work and the vital importance of AI application and broader AI adoption through an increase in the number of asks for Vector to participate in the development of government policy, programs, and publications
  • Positive impact on Vector’s financial independence and an increase in overall understanding of Vector’s impact within Canada’s economy and AI ecosystem with governments and institutions at all levels

PROFILE OF THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Minimum 5-7 years of related experience in government relations and/or public relations with a focus on public sector
  • University degree in a related field (e.g., Communications, Public Relations, Business Administration, Journalism), or equivalent combination of education and experience satisfactory to Vector
  • Proven experience working with governments and institutions
  • Understanding of the technology sector in Canada and interest in artificial intelligence 
  • A self-starter, able to translate complex or ambiguous ideas into clear actionable priorities and follow through with high quality deliverables on tight deadlines
  • Experience developing project plans and managing project teams to produce high-quality deliverables on tight timelines
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills 
  • Ability to speak other languages is considered an asset
