District Principal of Indigenous Education and Curriculum



The North Okanagan-Shuswap School District invites applications from individuals who are seeking a challenging and rewarding educational leadership opportunity in a vibrant and beautiful environment.  The start date for the position is negotiable depending on the availability of the successful applicant but is anticipated that the appointment would be effective August 1, 2018.


Our District

In the North Okanagan-Shuswap School District, we serve just over 6300 students in 23 schools through a variety of sites located around Shuswap Lake and the North Okanagan. We are known for strong academic achievement, a thriving trades and careers program, and a rich culture of school athletics. The school district supports Indigenous learners from five distinct communities, which include the Adams Lake Band, the Little Shuswap Lake Band, the Neskonlith Band, the Splatsin First Nation, and the Salmon Arm Metis Association. A newly developed Strategic Plan prioritizes a “students first” focus on success, organizational efficiency, and a culture of health and wellness as our key goals.

The Position

The District Principal of Indigenous Education reports directly to the Superintendent of Schools and provides leadership regarding the success of Indigenous learners and learning. Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading and supervising the Indigenous Education Department and its staff
  • Supporting the incorporation of Indigenous curriculum, culture, knowledge, and history
  • Collaborating with principals and vice-principals to develop instructional knowledge and supports leading to success for Indigenous learners
  • Implementing assessments to monitor the quality of programs and services provided to Indigenous learners
  • Establishing and administering the annual budget for Aboriginal Education’s targeted funding
  • Working with Indigenous communities and stakeholders to develop, implement, and evaluate an Aboriginal Education Enhancement Agreement (AEEA)
  • Overseeing the Department of Indigenous Services Canada (DISC) Nominal Roll and supporting the Local Education Agreement (LEA)
  • Collecting, managing, reporting on local and Ministry Aboriginal student data
  • Working directly with the Senior Leadership Team on all aspects of education and instruction, and with the Human Resources Department on all aspects of staff employment



The preferred candidate will possess the following qualifications, experience and attributes:

  • Teacher Regulation Branch certification or eligibility
  • Masters of Education preferred or equivalent post-secondary graduate training
  • Strong knowledge of Indigenous curriculum, culture, challenges, and opportunities with the school system
  • Extensive and successful experience working with students of Indigenous ancestry and communities
  • Successful previous administrative experience would be an asset
  • Superior interpersonal and conflict resolution skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Exemplary organizational and planning skills
  • Strong managerial skills and financial/budget experience
  • Additional consideration will be given to candidates with Indigenous ancestry
