Bursary and Scholarship Program Officer

Indspire is an Indigenous-led national registered charity that invests in the education of Indigenous people for the long term benefit of these individuals, their families and communities, and Canada. With the support of its funding partners, Indspire disburses financial awards, delivers programs, and shares resources with the goal of closing the gap in Indigenous education. Through Indspire’s K-12 Institute, it provides resources to educators, communities, and other stakeholders who are committed to improving kindergarten to grade 12 success for Indigenous youth. In 2015-16, Indspire awarded $12.2 million through 3,792 bursaries and scholarships to Indigenous youth, making it the largest funder of Indigenous education outside the federal government. Each year, the organization presents the Indspire Awards, a gala celebration of the successes achieved by Indigenous people that is broadcast nationally.


Never has there been a better time to join this national leader.  The Bursary and Scholarship Program Officer, reports to the Director, Post-Secondary Education (PSE), providing program support, including technical troubleshooting, form development/revision and training to the Education Department. Manages all activities related to post-secondary education scholarship and bursary applicants. Acts as point of contact for all applicant and general public inquiries throughout the Scholarship and Bursary process. Conducts outreach to expand all aspects of service to applicants; before, during, and after application process.


The position responsibilities of the Bursary and Scholarship Officer include:

Key Duties

  • Manage and revise Scholarship and Bursary application form and guidelines as needed.
  • Coordinate the assessment of student applications; assessing eligibility, sort and categorize into program, manually reviewing budget, assess for completeness according to criteria.
  • Act as point of contact for all applicants and respond on a daily basis to telephone and email inquiries from applicants and the general public.
  • Match recipient to donors and work closely with Finance and Administration to process.
  • Enter applicant data in the database, if needed for French applicants and update information on applicants.
  • Prepare spreadsheets of eligible, ineligible applicants and unsuccessful applicants.
  • Prepare, review and revise all Jury spreadsheets and prepare memos for jury. 
  • Communicate with applicants by email and telephone prior to Jury regarding their outstanding documentation, budget revision, etc.
  • Contact eligible applicants by email and telephone to notify that their application will proceed to Jury.
  • Coordinate and attend Bursary and Scholarship Jury sessions.
  • Ensure adherence to sponsor criteria throughout the Jury process and matching.
  • Prepare letters to notify successful, ineligible, and unsuccessful applicants.
  • Contact successful applicants by email and telephone after Jury for banking information and maintain ongoing communication with recipients; to ensure correct documentation is submitted.
  • Prepare original spreadsheets for submission to the Finance and Administration Department and oversee spreadsheet clean up as needed.
  • Coordinate ongoing internally assessed students according to Bursary and Scholarship policy.
  • Review and recommend revisions to Bursary and Scholarship policies and forms.
  • Provide technical troubleshooting support to Education Department.
  • Assist in the development of outreach activities, i.e. webinars.
  • Produce queries and statistical information requests from other Departments as needed.
  • Participate in external events such as conferences, trade shows, and career fairs to promote Indspire programs.
  • Follow up with students who have received awards after they have completed their programs.


  • Completion of 2 year college diploma in relevant field (education, administration, or social sciences) or equivalent
  • Progressive experience usually demonstrated through 3-5 years work experience in related field
  • Knowledge of the issues affecting Indigenous peoples and experience in Indigenous communities preferred
  • Ability to work in an high volume processing enviroment
  • Ability to provide work direction to students, contractors and volunteers
  • Strong and effective spoken and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, flexible, work within short timelines
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage and prioritize competing demands
  • Ability to work independently and work well with a team.
  • Ability to deal with difficult situations and at times work with difficult people.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong technical skills and proficiency with MS Office, database systems, strong skills with Excel spreadsheets
  • Ability to work with sensitive information with complete confidentiality
  • Ability to work in French is an asset
  • Occasional travel between Six Nations and Toronto offices is required
  • Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends and possess a willingness to travel within Canada.
