Consultant, Indigenous Affairs

Are you a subject matter expert with lived experience, looking for an opportunity to advance the City of Toronto’s relationship with Indigenous peoples and contribute to reconciliation? If so, consider this unique opportunity to do so with the City’s new Indigenous Affairs Office.


As Consultant, Indigenous Affairs, you will work in an environment where your political acumen, strengths as a leader and considerable lived, practical and relevant working experience in the area of Aboriginal/Indigenous relations will drive your ability to influence and help shape the direction of the Indigenous Affairs Office. Working across the Toronto Public Service and with Indigenous partners, you will provide expertise and strategic advice to the City, building relationships with the Indigenous community. You are a strategic and results-oriented thinker, committed to human rights and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, and knowledgeable about Indigenous peoples in Canada, including the legal, social, economic and political issues affecting Indigenous communities. Cognizant of a constantly changing landscape, you’ll monitor current trends and issues in these areas, including legislative and policy proposals that impact urban and other Aboriginal/Indigenous communities, and use this insight to develop policies and prepare reports recommending strategic and policy directions for the City.

As an analytical and politically acute professional, you will bring extensive experience in policy review, urban research, and policy development, planning from inception through to implementation, including organizational change strategies within a large public or private sector organization.

With a focus on continuous improvement and equity of outcomes, you will act as a resource for staff and elected officials to identify and act on current and anticipated needs and issues, and track the City’s progress in embedding Aboriginal/Indigenous Affairs in the delivery of its programs and services to all of Toronto’s diverse communities.

With your track record of effectively developing and delivering educational and presentation materials on Aboriginal/Indigenous issues, you’ll be counted upon to identify, promote and facilitate the development and implementation of Aboriginal/Indigenous content in City policies, programs, initiatives, surveys, learning/education, tools, guides and manuals to ensure effective communications and outreach.

A persuasive and tactful communicator at all organizational levels, you’re adept at public and employee engagement, from supporting committees and communities of practice, to employee resource groups, and well prepared to represent the Indigenous Affairs Office at corporate, intergovernmental, multi-sectoral, public meetings and Indigenous cultural events. A degree or diploma in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent background, will complete your profile.
