Community Librarian (Indigenous Relations)

Edmonton has an active and growing Indigenous community with the second largest urban Indigenous population in Canada. The Edmonton Public Library is located on Treaty Six territory and the Homeland of the Metis Nation. EPL is committed to a strong and lasting relationship with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples.  

In keeping with Edmonton Public Library’s Community-Led Service model, we are looking for a Community Librarian to connect, consult and collaborate with Indigenous communities in Edmonton and area. This person will provide expertise to support the provision of services that meet the needs and interests of Indigenous communities. The Community Librarian also provides system-wide leadership to staff in the provision of community-led service to Indigenous communities and is a member of EPL’s Indigenous Services Team.

What we're looking for:

The Community Librarian (Indigenous Relations) is a skilled relationship-builder, with a passion for making a difference.  This individual has in-depth knowledge and experience working with Indigenous communities and demonstrates an understanding of historical context, cultural practices, protocols and Indigenous ways of knowing and being.  

Job Requirements: 

  • Master of Library & Information Studies degree, or equivalent, from ALA-accredited institution is required.
  • Related experience and demonstrated expertise in understanding and applying Indigenous historical and cultural contexts in relationship development and service delivery.

  • Direct and in-depth understanding of local Indigenous communities including Indigenous perspectives, histories, traditions, and protocols.

  • Ability to build and maintain sensitive and complex relationships.
  • Ability to work effectively with people of all age levels and backgrounds; recognizing the needs of users from a wide variety of cultural, economic, social and educational backgrounds.
  • Superior interpersonal, communication, negotiation, presentation and collaboration skills.
  • Strong organizational and project leadership skills.
  • The ability to work positively and effectively within a team environment.

Hours per week: 35

Pay Band:
$38.56 - $49.22 per hour*

*Approximately $70,463 - $89,930 per annum based on a 35 hour work week.

Shift differential may apply in accordance with the terms and conditions of the CSU 52 Collective Agreement.


  • The successful candidate may be eligible for relocation assistance.
  • Satisfactory background screenings is required for this position which includes a Criminal Record Check/Police Information Check. 
  • This position will require some travel throughout Edmonton and surrounding areas. Access to a vehicle for business purposes is strongly preferred.
  • This position consists of varied schedules which include day, evening and weekend shifts.
