Humber College Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning, established in 1967, is one of the largest colleges in Canada. Humber College emphasizes a polytechnic style of education, which incorporates theoretical knowledge and hands-on, practical experience. Located in Toronto, Ontario, Humber College offers over 170 programs including apprenticeships, certificates, diplomas, bachelor’s degrees, and post-graduate certificates across three campuses. The Division of Students & Institutional Planning provides programs and services to support access and academic and personal success for a diverse community of learners at Humber College. The Division provides front-line support for Humber’s learners and aids the College in achieving its goals as articulated in Humber’s Strategic Plan. The Division is comprised of more than 300 dedicated full-time faculty, support staff, and administrators, along with hundreds of part-time and student staff with a breadth of expertise and experience.

Under the general direction of the Vice-President, Students & Institutional Planning, the Dean of Students is accountable for furthering the student experience through innovative and effective student services that support the physical and emotional well-being of students and positively impact their engagement and success. The Dean is responsible for providing strategic leadership for the broad range of student programs and activities offered by the Student Success and Engagement unit, as well as for hiring, training, and mentoring members of the student success team. The Dean is expected to communicate with students, internal, and external stakeholders and ensure that policies, procedures, practices, and programs work to serve the entire student population. The Dean of Students has primary responsibility for the Code of Student Conduct and coordinates appropriate response and support to staff, faculty, and students. Additionally, the Dean maintains effective working relationships with all academic faculties to develop co-curricular programs with a focus on student success, personal growth, and student leadership development and is also responsible for facilitating positive relations with the Students’ Union. The Dean contributes to College leadership by chairing or actively contributing to a very broad range of internal and external committees and working groups.  

The ideal candidate will possess at minimum a Master’s degree, preferably in developmental psychology, education, counselling, social work, higher education, student affairs or a related field, and a record of successful academic administrative and leadership experience in the university or college sectors. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a track record of success in a leadership role within a large, complex, multi-stakeholder organization, as well as highly developed skills/training in operational management, budgeting, human resource management, marketing, and promotion. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to analyze and interpret data and research for effective decision-making, planning, and assessment. It is critical that the ideal candidate have an ability to work effectively and collegially with academic and administrative colleagues and student organizations, to actively listen to others and garner cooperation and support. The ideal candidate must have a high level of confidentiality and professionalism, and the ability to approach sensitive issues with tact, diplomacy, and compassion.
