Amnesty International Canada is recruiting an Indigenous Rights Campaign Advisor.
The Advisor holds primary responsibility for building and maintaining relationships with rights holders and other partners in the promotion of the human rights of Indigenous peoples in Canada. The Advisor leads the Branch’s work in support of those specific land rights cases taken up by the Branch and more widely in promotion of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and other international human rights standards for the rights of Indigenous peoples.
The Advisor supports staff across departments in Branch work related to other themes of Indigenous rights, such as violence against Indigenous women and girls. Through relations with Indigenous peoples’ organizations and individual Indigenous rights defenders, participation in coalitions and networks, and coordination of original research, the Advisor ensures that advocacy positions taken in respect to Indigenous rights in Canada are accurate, strategic and appropriate.
Throughout their work, all employees must contribute to gender equity, integrate youth, and address the broader goals of diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-oppression.
The principal responsibilities include:
- Foundational work – leading on the Branch’s engagement with Indigenous rightsholders, maintaining relationships with Indigenous rights defenders and related organizations. Facilitating coalitions and networks and partnering on initiatives. Monitoring and conducting or coordinating primary research in Canada. Identifying changes in law and policy and providing strategic and political analysis. Supporting Amnesty Canada’s Francophone Branch and the international movement in their work on Indigenous rights.
- High-level advocacy – Preparing briefings, reports or submissions in support of key cases and themes. Developing content for Branch publications such as the annual Human Rights Agenda for Canada. Leading advocacy efforts and engaging with government representatives, corporations and civil society organizations.
- Public-facing work – Participating in the development of campaign strategies to mobilize Amnesty Canada’s membership and members of the public on Indigenous rights issues. In collaboration with other teams, developing action opportunities and content for various audiences and methods of engagement, including for the website or social media channels. Acting as spokesperson, or supporting others, including partners to be spokespersons.
- Administrative responsibilities – drafting and monitoring operational plans and budgets. Participating in and supporting evaluation of the areas of work. Responding to inquiries.
- Diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-oppression – ensuring DEI and anti-oppression principles and practices are regularly considered and integrated into strategies and materials, as well as reflected in day-to-day interactions.

- A minimum of 3 years of experience working for or in collaboration with Indigenous peoples’ organizations.
- Prior experience with campaigns to promote human rights of Indigenous peoples.
- University degree with some general or specialized background in Indigenous rights or a minimum of 3 years post-high school work or volunteer experience in a related field.
- A broad knowledge of domestic and international frameworks to protect the human rights of Indigenous Peoples.
- Knowledge of First Nations, Inuit and Metis history in Canada.
- Demonstrated cultural competency in working in Indigenous contexts.
- Understanding of trauma-informed, culturally relevant approaches to research and collaboration.
- Ability to think and plan strategically, including advocacy and strategic thinking skills, and ability to collaborate with rights holders, partners, staff and members in developing strategy.
- Ability to learn from, and help others learn from, experiences.
- Excellent communication skills necessary to act as a spokesperson for the Branch as appropriate, and work collaboratively with colleagues based in various locations across the country, region and world.
- Ability to write accurate and compelling content for a variety of audiences.
- Computer literacy, including the ability to write and post material on the Branch’s website.
- Ability to contribute to the diversity of Amnesty’s workforce and its inclusive and anti-oppression practices.
- Ability to travel or work on evenings and weekends, and overtime as required.
Hours: Full-time (37.5 hours/week)
Duration: Permanent (pending 6-months probation)
Location: Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, or remote working arrangement
Salary: $65,660 – 57,553, commensurate with qualifications, plus competitive benefits
