Faculty Position in Climate Change Science and Policy

The School of Environmental Studies (http://www.queensu.ca/ensc) (SES) at Queen’s University invites applications for a faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor with specialization in Climate Change Science and Policy. This is a tenure-track position with a preferred starting date of July 1, 2022.
We seek a broadly trained climate scientist whose interdisciplinary research informs policy actions to address the global climate crisis. Specific research areas could include – but are not limited to – the physical basis of global climate change, global climate modeling, greenhouse gas emissions scenarios and forecasting, atmospheric monitoring, carbon sequestration, negative emissions technologies, nature-based climate solutions, and climate adaptation science. Applicants should have a demonstrated and genuine appreciation for the need to address climate change from a holistic and interdisciplinary perspective. Their research should bridge to environmental policy by addressing the need for net-zero emissions and the tools and approaches necessary for achieving this. This could include a global perspective through the UN Sustainable Development Goals, featuring but not limited to SDG 13 (climate action). We are especially interested in scholars who engage with audiences outside of academia, including policy and decision makers, Indigenous communities and organizations, civil society and the broader public.
The School of Environmental Studies is a diverse unit that fosters interdisciplinary teaching and research on the environment by promoting collaboration among faculty in the natural and social sciences and humanities departments and other Faculties at Queen’s. At the heart of our approach to teaching and research is the recognition that environmental challenges are complex and multifaceted, and therefore require an integrated approach to their solutions. We currently have 11 faculty members, most of whom are jointly appointed to other units. We support BSc and BA programs at the undergraduate level, as well as MES and PhD programs at the graduate level. We are ideally positioned to host a faculty member working on the cross-cutting aspects of climate change science with the knowledge and experience in translating this science into action at local, regional, national or global scales.
The successful candidate will be appointed to SES, where they will teach and conduct research (including supervision of student research). They will be cross appointed in the School of Policy Studies (https://www.queensu.ca/sps/) to teach one graduate course each year on the topic of Climate Change Science and Policy. The cross appointment will be subject to periodic review. The School of Policy Studies provides applied teaching and training at the graduate level and draws on a network of faculty, alumni, researchers and community partners to impact public good. It offers two different Master’s degree programs in public administration.
Candidates are required to have a PhD or equivalent degree in a relevant field at the starting date of the appointment. The main criteria for selection are academic and teaching excellence. The successful candidate is required to provide evidence of high-quality scholarly output that demonstrates potential for independent research leading to peer-assessed publications, the securing of external research funding, and the potential to make relevant contributions toward resolving the global climate crisis through their research. The successful candidate will also demonstrate strong potential for outstanding teaching contributions at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and an ongoing commitment to academic and pedagogical excellence. Postdoctoral experience involving undergraduate and graduate supervision and teaching is considered an asset, as is relevant professional experience addressing global climate change and identifying solutions, and engaging with audiences outside academia. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to fostering equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Applicants must provide evidence of their ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary and student-centred environment. In addition to teaching and research, the successful candidate will be required to make substantive service contributions to SES, the Faculty, the University, and the broader community. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

• a two-page statement of current research interests and plans;
• a two-page statement of teaching interests and experience (a teaching dossier including teaching outlines and evaluations may be appended);
• a one-page outline of a graduate course in ‘Climate Change Science and Policy’ open to graduate students in policy studies and environmental studies, but also to students in cognate units such as geography, biology, geology, and civil engineering.
• a one-page statement of experience with, and commitment to, facilitation and promotion of equity, diversity, and inclusion; and,
• the names and contact information for three referees who may be contacted to provide letters of reference.
