POSITION OVERVIEW 

 

Reporting to the Director, Health Data and Strategic Partnerships, the Data Steward will enable the use of data for public benefit, research impact, and translational effectiveness in a systematic, sustainable, and responsible way, working closely with colleagues across workstreams, with external stakeholders, and with Vector’s research community to ensure a consistent and comprehensive approach to stewarding data assets within Vector’s computing environments.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Working with the Director, Health Data and Strategic Partnerships, the Director, Research Operations, and the Chief Information Officer, lead in developing a data partnership and acquisition strategy to identify and facilitate access to high impact data assets. This would include building a strategic plan and implementation support to establish Vector as a centre of excellence for data used for AI/ML research and application;
  • Develop a Cybersecurity Risk Management Plan in consultation and collaboration with the Director, Health Data and Strategic Partnerships and the Chief Information Officer, and support compliance functions such as credentialing standards, and audit/monitoring;
  • Steward data assets brought into Vector computing environments, including:
    • Work with data partners on quality assurance, data privacy, data discoverability (e.g., development of meta-data and data dictionaries), and data accountability to optimize productive and responsible AI research, producing associated documentation for internal and external sharing throughout the data lifecycle;
    • Develop, implement, and continuously improve governance models and data-relevant policies that are “fit for purpose” and create coherence across Vector’s research data-driven activities;
    • Work with Vector researchers and technical staff to ensure data suitability, quality, and readiness for AI/ML research;
    • Advise the Health Research Operations portfolio on development and implementation of data management policies and processes.
  • Steward data-relevant relationships, including:
    • Collaborate with work stream leaders to identify, map, vet, and engage with possible partners and other stakeholders;
    • Collaborate with data partners and stakeholders to develop and maintain collaborations that enable data-driven research aligned with Vector’s governance framework, policies and processes;
    • Help establish social license for re-using data through deliberation and ecosystem engagement;
  • Steward Internal Resources, Expertise, and Authorities, including:
    • Act as Secretariat for Vector’s Data Stewardship Committee, bringing in-scope issues to the Committee for oversight and advice and supporting the Committee to deliver on its terms of reference;

 

  • Gain approval from and coordinate with internal stakeholders on data strategy, governance and policies, and support the Health Research Operations portfolio on coordination and approvals related to data-relevant agreements ;
  • Ensure all internal stakeholders and organizational leadership are informed and aligned as it relates to data strategy, governance, and policies;
  • Support the Health Research Operations portfolio to establish data operations to map and match internal resources, expertise and skills needed to enable data collaboration.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

 

KEY SUCCESS MEASURES

 

  • Vector establishes itself as a trustworthy steward of data and thought leader in advancing data-driven AI/ML research;
  • Vector achieves its goals for its health stakeholder and industry sponsor relationships;
  • The Vector Health team achieves its annual targets; and,
  • Internal and external stakeholder feedback is such that the Vector Health team provides high-quality service and support through effective working relationships.

 

PROFILE OF THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

 

  • Holds, at minimum, a university degree in a business, health, technical, or related field, a graduate degree in these fields is considered an asset.
  • Experience analysing and conducting quality assurance of sensitive or regulated data, ideally health data, including generating data summary and data quality reports.
  • Experience in database management and running queries to gather data.
  • Broader R&D and/or health sector experience is considered an asset.
  • Adept at building and effectively managing multidisciplinary project teams, prioritizing conflicting needs, managing limited resources, handling matters expeditiously, and following through on tasks to successful completion.
  • Possesses exceptional verbal and written English communication skills; effective in presenting to a diverse set of stakeholders from the business and technology ecosystem.
  • Understands the primary roles of the various organizations including innovative Ontario organizations, (e.g., OCI, MaRS) and key health sector players, (i.e., major research hospitals, ICES, Health Canada) and their programmes in support of innovation, research, and startups.
  • Brings a positive attitude and energy, integrity, a sense of humour, and outlook to a corporate culture, and is motivated by continuous learning and the desire to make a difference and a real contribution to AI.
