The City of Coquitlam is one of BC’s Top Employers and is home to more than 150,000 residents. The municipality continues to grow through innovative urban design, inspiring arts, culture and recreation programs, and state-of-the-art transportation systems. Its brand is built on managing our resources in a responsible and sustainable manner, while supporting a vibrant, growing regional urban centre.

Reporting to the Director, Intergovernmental Relations, the new Indigenous Relations Manager will have a key role in increasing staff knowledge and skills; augmenting City policies and practices; while identifying and dismantling systemic barriers and advancing an organizational culture of safety and belonging. The Manager will collaborate with individuals across the organization to support the identification and implementation of this work across City departments, act as an advisor to Council and the senior leadership team, and facilitate and build relationships with local Indigenous leaders, communities, and groups.

The successful candidate will be deeply committed to leading change, including meaningful reconciliation initiatives, while influencing organizational culture across the programs and services offered by the City. The successful candidate will bring a high-level of cultural competency, including an understanding of colonization, decolonization, settler/indigenous relationships as well as knowledge of Indigenous peoples' unique histories, cultures, values, and protocols. The ideal candidate will have a degree in Indigenous Studies, Business Administration, Public Administration, Public Policy, or a related field, supplemented by a minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in a comparable management role, preferably within the public sector. Sound experience working with Indigenous communities and facilitating engagement and/or consultation with local First Nations is essential.

The City offers a competitive salary starting at $125,000 (with the opportunity to advance to $140,000 in the role).

The City of Coquitlam is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority. Due to the mandate of this position, significant and sustained effort will be made to encourage candidates from equity-deserving groups and with lived experience of marginalization and oppression (including Indigenous, Black and People of Colour, Women, LGBTQIA2S+ and persons with disabilities) to apply.
