Job Summary

The City of Mississauga's Environment Section has evolved over the last few years, particularly with the approval by Council of the Climate Change Action Plan (CCAP) in December 2019. Under the direction of the Environmental Sustainability Supervisor, the Environmental Initiatives Coordinator will lead aspects of the development and coordination of projects supporting the CCAP including actions related to circular economy, air quality, community litter, and other environmental initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Supervisor, Environmental Sustainability, the successful candidate will:
• Execute, coordinate and support projects, programs, policies and strategies regarding actions identified in the Climate Change Action Plan and the Environment Section’s strategic work (e.g. environmental sustainability, circular economy, waste and air quality)
• Facilitate advancement of new and emerging Environment Section initiatives and Corporate/Departmental/Divisional priorities
• Research and track environmental sustainability developments and trends, including, but not limited to, leading practices, benchmarks, emerging and innovative technology, and programs in other jurisdictions
• Engage internal and external stakeholders and key networks on environmental matters
• Coordinate with internal and external stakeholder groups to create and manage project controls such as data gathering, management and analytical processes
• Support the tracking of new regulations and policies
• Support project management systems and requirements (e.g. project charters and project measurements)
• Research and prepare reports, correspondence, oral presentations for prospective community partners, client groups, and internal management team
• Perform other duties as assigned

Skills and Qualifications

Required:
• Post-secondary degree from a recognized university or college in environmental studies, engineering, or related field (a focus on environmental sustainability is preferred) or equivalent three (3) years’ work related experience
• Three (3) to seven (7) years work experience in environmental sustainability programs or similar initiatives, depending on educational experience
• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the principles of climate change and environmental policy development, familiarity with environmental legislation, environmental sustainability, community development, and municipal administration
• Strong research, analytical, statistical, graphical and numerical skills
• Must have strong organizational, analytical, problem solving and research skills, including the ability to effectively handle concurrent projects strategically and creatively under deadlines
• Excellent oral and written communication skills including strong presentation skills, report writing skills with the ability to liaise effectively with external agencies, stakeholders, and the general public
• Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, employees in other service areas, internal and external customers (other City employees and the general public), regional partners and provincial groups
• Demonstrated skill with Microsoft Office Suite applications and databases
Additional Desired Qualifications
• Certification/course completion in Corporate Social Responsibility, Environmental, Social and Governance, UN SDGs or equivalent would be deemed an asset
