Director, Indigenous Relations

At SGI, we are focused on an exciting future involving growth, change and transformation. We are seeking a dynamic, energetic, and passionate Director, Indigenous Relations to join our Corporate Auto Fund team in Regina OR Saskatoon; other locations in Saskatchewan may be considered.

In early 2020, SGI became one of the first signatories of the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce’s Indigenous Engagement Charter, outlining our commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls-to-Action.  As SGI advances its commitments to Indigenous communities and peoples, this newly created position will provide strategic leadership to the whole organization, playing a pivotal role with the Board, Executive Leadership Team, and various divisions across the organization- especially those with direct and indirect interactions with Indigenous communities.

Reporting to the Sr. Director, Corporate Auto Fund, you will have an active leadership role in advising the Board, SGI Executive and Senior management on issues and strategies to improve outcomes and economic impacts for Indigenous Peoples by ensuring the Indigenous needs, voices and perspectives are considered and reflected in SGI programs, policies, services, decisions, and direction.

Here's the impact you'll make and what we'll accomplish together:

  • Responsible for leading and directing the development, expansion, execution, and management of the Indigenous partnership strategy for all the Auto Fund functions, outside of Claims, to enhance and contribute to customer and partners experiences, traffic safety promotion and efficient operations. Build positive and mutually beneficial relationships with Indigenous communities and peoples based on respect and understanding. Proactively work with communities to engage, communicate, and seek feedback to address gaps. Participate in SGI’s response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report and recommendations and supports SGI in the efforts to develop a diverse and inclusive workforce by providing advice and support to the Director, Talent Acquisition, Diversity & Inclusion on training and learning opportunities, and recruitment and retention strategies for Indigenous employees with SGI. Acts as a strategic advisor and represents SGI as a member on external committees, which are accountable for analyzing, identifying, organizing, developing, and communicating recommended actions and best practices that support and promote Indigenous engagement across Saskatchewan’s Crown corporations and executive government ministries by achieving strategic alignment, cost savings and improved customer delivery. Co-lead the SGI Indigenous Engagement Steering Committee and support in creating an Indigenous Employee Advisory committee. Develops, organizes, and delivers presentations, reports and briefing for internal and external audiences.

This role is a great fit for individuals looking for an opportunity in helping to shape SGI’s future. In addition, the ideal candidate believes in the importance of collaboration and building relationships, is committed to outstanding service, knows what it means to have a growth-mindset, and leads by example by demonstrating accountability, change agility and excellence in leadership.

Here’s what we’re looking for:

Candidates must bring the education and experience to succeed in this unique opportunity.  We are looking for candidates who have a four-year degree in a relevant field of study such as Indigenous Studies, Business, Communications or Community Development.  Candidates should have at least ten years’ experience comprised of six years leadership experience with increasing responsibility, and four years of experience in the development and execution of Indigenous relationship building and outcomes.  Strong understanding of First Nations and Metis issues with the ability to provide cultural interpretation and direction to protocols, traditions, values, beliefs, and cultural and legal distinctions.

For this position, we want to highlight that First Nations, Inuit or Metis ancestry is regarded as directly relevant to the skills and knowledge for excellence in the position. Preference will be given to qualified Indigenous candidates who self-identify.
