The University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) is actively seeking an experienced academic leader to serve as their next Dean, Faculty of Nursing. The next Dean will join the university at an exciting time with the recent provincial support to expand the Faculty of Nursing and the UPEI Health and Wellness Centre, as well as the establishment of a new Faculty of Medicine at UPEI in partnership with Memorial University of Newfoundland.
Located in Charlottetown, the birthplace of Confederation and the capital city of Prince Edward Island, the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) has a rich history with roots in two founding institutions, Prince of Wales College (est. 1834) and Saint Dunstan’s University (est. 1855). Reporting to the Vice-President, Academic and Research, the Dean of Nursing is responsible for the academic and administrative direction of the Faculty. The Dean will provide leadership and guidance to foster an atmosphere of unity and cooperation among departments, faculty, staff, and community members while building and sustaining a culture that supports academic, research, and operational excellence. Through strategic and visionary leadership, the Dean promotes excellence in nursing education, practice, research, scholarship and creative activity. As an ambassador and advocate for the Faculty across the University and within and beyond the regional community, the Dean will enhance student experience and success, and attract and retain an exceptional faculty and staff complement. The new Dean has a passion for student success and demonstrated strength in mentoring and building collaborative teams.
As the ideal candidate, you have a graduate degree in Nursing, and a doctoral degree in Nursing or related field. You will possess an outstanding scholarly record, administrative and teaching leadership experience, and have experience with university-based undergraduate and graduate programs in Nursing. As an academic leader, you are passionate about creating an environment that enables students, faculty and staff to develop and achieve their goals and have a record of inspiring others to excel. You have a deep understanding and appreciation of the collegial and consultative climate at the university level and will work effectively and productively within it. You have sound knowledge of nursing education and practice, as well as an understanding of current and emerging approaches to teaching and learning. With a demonstrated track record of service to the community and profession, you have an appreciation for the opportunities for transformation in the healthcare system and the role that nurses can play in this transformation.
The University of Prince Edward Island and the Province of Prince Edward Island are committed to reconciliation, including the 94 TRC Calls to Action and the MMIWG 231 Calls to Justice. The 2021 PEI provincial report on MMIWG lists Indigenous health care as a top priority. The province and University recognize the value of Indigenous healing practices and their use in treating Indigenous patients. The University is implementing several courses on Indigenous culture and ways of knowing. The Faculty of Nursing works closely with the Faculty of Indigenous Knowledge, Education, Research and Applied Studies (IKERAS) on reconciliation and meeting the health care calls to action and justice. Candidates will understand the need for reconciliation and why it is a critical part of nursing education.
The Dean’s salary is determined by the UPEI / UPEIFA Collective Agreement and an additional decanal stipend. The salary range for this position is $152,000 to $191,000.
