Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, the Director, Recreation & Culture (Director) is an integral member of the Senior Leadership Team and provides strategic leadership and direction to the City’s Recreation & Culture department in alignment with the City’s mission, vision, values, and strategic plan. In addition to providing strategic counsel to the senior team as well as to Mayor and Council, the Director is responsible for approving budget recommendations, identifying alternative courses of action, leading staff on daily tasks in the provision of sport, recreation, and arts and cultural services and overseeing all department activities. Additionally. The individual will sit on key advisory committees and ensure an accessible, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all staff, residents and visitors, building capacity to address and eliminate systemic barriers.

The ideal candidate is a visionary leader and facilitator with outstanding organizational and interpersonal skills. Possessing a broad range of knowledge, the Director will understand the recreation and cultural needs of a community that hosts residents and tourist across all ages and demographics and can work collaboratively and effectively with a vast variety of volunteer organizations.  Ideally possessing extensive service delivery and operations experience, the successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional leadership skills and a proven ability to develop credibility and effective working relationships with employees, volunteers, community leaders, and a variety of external partners. Customer-service oriented, the incumbent will welcome the challenge of seeking continuous improvements in organizational efficiency and create a culture of partnership that results in the maximum utilization of recreation and cultural assets.

The successful candidate will possess a degree or have done post graduate studies in Recreation, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related field, supplemented by a number of years of demonstrated progressive experience with recent senior level management experience in a recreation or administrative role, preferably in a municipal setting, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
