Amnesty International Canadian Section (English Speaking) also known as AICSES is looking for a Digital Engagement Coordinator to join our growing Communications Team. This position is primarily responsible for supporting the Branch’s Programs teams (campaigning and activism) as well as its fundraising team and their priorities with a wide range of communication services, focusing on the digital space. The position and time commitment are envisaged as a 50/50 split between work on Programs and Fundraising, with increased emphasis on fundraising in the last quarter of every year. The Coordinator works to create messaging, develop promotion strategies, and coordinate the development of communications assets necessary to inspire public and member engagement in Amnesty’s priority human rights work.

Reporting to the Programs Manager (Organizing and Mobilizing), the Coordinator plays a leading role in formulating and delivering public engagement projects that grow Amnesty’s supporter base and deepen member activism. The Coordinator has primary responsibility for creating the content delivered via email to Amnesty’s central emailing lists in order to engage members, generate activism, and deliver on our organizational goals and strategic priorities. This responsibility includes action-based emails, digital newsletters, and coordination of outputs across teams.

The position is focused on reaching and engaging various audiences to facilitate lead generation and growth in both activism and fundraising in support of the global movement. The other supporting areas of work for the Coordinator are the cultivation of digital supporter journeys, a leadership role in our annual Write for Rights campaign, and the alignment of Amnesty’s communication and organizing techniques to achieve broad public engagement. 

The Digital Engagement Coordinator will be joining Amnesty International Canada during an exciting time of transformation. This individual will work closely with colleagues across the section to develop purposeful messaging and communications content in support of Amnesty’s vision to be a bigger, bolder, and more equitable organization, as well as contribute to improving communications systems, processes, and tools to ensure they are fit for purpose.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Coordination of central emailing program

  • Work with Program staff, including colleagues on the Communications, Activism and Campaigner teams, to develop and deliver targeted email messages to key segments
  • Collaborate with colleagues across departments to write and distribute emails on major campaigns
  • Write and publish content to deepen supporter engagement
  • Work with the Digital Strategist to improve segmentation, establish best practices, and testing to maximize conversion on email actions and fundraising appeals
  • Develop email planning for campaigns, including schedule and segmentation
  • Monitor, report on, and analyze results on an ongoing basis and make recommendations to promote reach, best practices and maximize our human rights impact
  • Ensure that diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI) and an intersectional, anti-racist, and anti-oppressive principles and practices are regularly considered and integrated into strategies and materials as well as day-to-day interactions with colleagues, rights holders, members, donors, and supporters

 

Supporter journeys

  • As a core member of cross-functional teams, ensure the Branch’s priority campaigns are designed and messaged to champion Amnesty’s brand and attract support from a diverse range of supporters, as well as mitigate against reputational risk
  • Identify and write content pieces and messaging required in supporter journeys
  • Liaise with colleagues across departments to ensure content adheres to our guidelines, is responsive to input received from our supporters and donors, and identify content needed to improve the quality and depth of supporters’ experience with Amnesty
  • Working with the Digital Strategist, develop communications to strengthen supporters’ connection to Amnesty’s human rights work and goals
  • Work with Digital Strategist and members of the Programs Team and Information Technology Services (ITS) colleagues to identify the best digital tools and practices for organizing supporters to achieve campaign goals
  • Work with vendors to develop strategies and content to enhance and test supporter journey paths via surveys and data management systems that track supporter interests/behaviours
  • Assist the Branch with the development of key tracks for supporter journeys, including the path from e-activism to participation in offline activities, significant giving, and other emerging opportunities
  • Coordinate with Fundraising colleagues to ensure continuity and harmonization of content, messaging, and brand

 

Public Engagement 

  • Contribute to effective content that communicates the Branch’s top messages to the public and Amnesty’s internal audiences across our communication channels
  • Assist in the development of strategies and projects to help Amnesty reach a wider public audience
  • Liaise with Program staff to develop content for the follow-up to high-profile campaigns
  • Play a lead role in coordinating Amnesty’s annual Write for Rights event
  • Report on key metrics and effectiveness of public engagement strategies Explore new lead sources to fuel activism and advocacy impact as well as fundraising goals
  • Provide backup to publishing on social media channels

 

Fundraising and Resource Development Support

 

  • Acquire and reactivate more digital monthly donors
  • Work with the Fundraising team to acquire new donors straight to monthly giving through email and digital campaigns
  • Work with the Fundraising team to acquire new leads for telemarketing conversion to monthly donors
  • Work with the Fundraising team to acquire single gift donors for telemarketing and email conversion to monthly donors
  • Work with the Fundraising team on the execution of Year-End campaign
  • Develop an annual plan and create content to convert single gift donors and activists to become monthly donors via email and work with the Digital Team to implement appeals
  • Work with external vendors and the Digital Team to recruit new donors through external marketing via Google Display Network, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube and other digital initiatives throughout the year
  • Work with Digital Team on opportunities for digital engagement with monthly donors as they arise
  • Work with Monthly Giving Digital Coordinator to produce e-newsletters, components of digital welcome journeys, and other email updates for monthly donors

 

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR IN A CANDIDATE

Amnesty International Canada is seeking an individual who can contribute to the diversity of Amnesty’s workforce and its inclusive, anti-racist, and anti-oppressive practices. Provide leadership in creating communication products and plans that embed the principles of human rights, equity and diversity, anti-racism, and anti-oppression (ARAO).

The successful candidate will have a strong and demonstrable background in writing, editing, and publishing, monitoring and evaluating, as well as campaigning using email lists and other marketing tools. The candidate will view problems as opportunities for creative solutions and innovation, and failures as learning opportunities.

 

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with the ability to draft plain language, clear, concise, and compelling communications for human rights organizations
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, and the ability to work under pressure, managing multiple priorities and tight deadlines
  • Experience advising on communications strategy
  • Experience in writing for both electronic and print media
  • Experience publishing with CMS systems such as WordPress
  • Experience with iMIS or other CRM/EMS applications (e.g. SalesForce) to track activity, run reports, and assess engagement
  • Experience with email marketing and/or mobilization
  • Proven ability to work with vendors and stakeholders
  • Confident use of graphic design applications such as Canva or Photoshop
  • Experience publishing and tracking engagement with social media platforms such as Tumblr, Twitter, Pinterest, Flickr, Facebook and YouTube
  • Experience in activism and using digital tools for organizing
  • Knowledge, training, and experience in anti-racism, anti-oppression, anti-Black racism, anti-discrimination, and decolonizing practices
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including a collaborative approach and willingness to self-reflect

  • Knowledge of Engaging Networks or similar advocacy platforms
  • Spoken and written French
