Job Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Park Services, and under the direction of the Community Development (CD) Coordinator, Parks Operations, the Parks Community Development Assistant will be responsible for working to support the successful implementation of assigned Parks Community Stewardship programs throughout various community/neighbourhood initiatives with community groups and volunteers across the city.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the CD Coordinator Parks Operations, The CD Assistant is responsible for the full delivery and maintenance of assigned Parks Community Stewardship and Outreach programs within budget
  • Coordinates and builds strong Community Stewardship programs between the City and the Community through educational activities with local community groups, schools and businesses
  • Supports planning and implementation of workshops and meetings with external stakeholders
  • Provides support for community engagement and capacity building activities including coordination of meetings and learning opportunities, information gathering, and communications
  • Coordinates, leads, and supports City staff and/or volunteers with the execution of Community Stewardship programs ensuring the health and safety of all participants
  • Supports the CD Coordinator to develop and maintain various project management tools (e.g. work breakdown schedule, Share Point sites)
  • Maintains accurate project databases, support research and information gathering activities related to key initiatives (e.g. benchmarking, surveys, data analysis)
  • Facilitates compliance with City processes and requirements
  • Provides timely and effective customer service
  • Implements problem-solving skills to resolve issues as required
  • Provides project leadership and implementation support in relation to team and divisional priorities as required
  • Responsible for the procurement, inventory and safe storage of all project supplies
  • In consultation with CD Coordinator hires, trains/mentors and evaluates seasonal staff
  • Supports projects as required by the other City Divisions/Departments where the CD Programmer is asked to assist
  • Other duties as assigned


Skills and Qualifications

  • Post - secondary degree or diploma with a focus on community development, recreation, sport or leisure studies, park operations, or related field along with a minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience
  • Specialized experience or training in areas including but not limited to project management, community engagement, fine arts, graphic design or related areas
  • Three (3) years’ experience volunteer management, community stewardship or community development projects
  • Knowledge and experience with planning and implementation of events and programs
  • Knowledge of and experience with working with local agencies, community groups, and volunteers
  • Strong analytical skills for developing and maintaining budgets and project schedules
  • Excellent customer service, oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to complete tasks independently within assigned timeframes
  • Strong administration, organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to coordinate information from multiple sources into databases including data entry and report production
  • Ability to work in a fast paced and changing environment and interest in broadening your experience is desired.
  • Valid Class ‘G’ Ontario driver’s license required
  • Ability to operate a commercial vehicle (pickup truck or equivalent) and trailer considered an asset
  • Must be flexible and capable to work overtime, weekends, evening meetings, and special events as required
  • Requires flexibility of work locations including the ability to work effectively from home and other locations across the city (e.g. parks, community centres and city facilities) in all weather conditions
  • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office. Experience with City Software such as CLASS, Share Point, Survey Monkey, Better Impact, etc.
  • Current CPR, First Aid Certification and High Five Principles of Healthy Child Development (or willing to obtain within the first six months of start date)
