Algoma University invites applications from Indigenous Scholars for Part-Time Contract Faculty (PTCF) positions to teach courses held at the Brampton campus, Sault St. Marie campus, and Virtually Online. Courses begin in the Winter 2023 semester.

About Algoma University

Since its establishment in 1965 as Algoma University College in Sault Ste. Marie, Algoma University has increasingly assumed a national leadership role in supporting the university sector’s response to Truth, Healing and Reconciliation. Algoma’s Special Mission is guided by the 7 Grandfather Teachings and Honoring Commitments, and is twofold in nature:  

  • to be a teaching-oriented university that provides programs in liberal arts and sciences and professional programs, primarily at the undergraduate level, with a focus on the needs of Northern Ontario; and to
  • cultivate cross-cultural learning between Indigenous communities and other communities in keeping with the history of Algoma University and its geographic site. 

With campuses located in Sault Ste. Part-Time Contract Faculty (PTCF) Opportunities

Algoma is looking for applications from Indigenous scholars to teach a potential range of courses including, but not limited to:

  1. Thinking and Working Across Cultures. This course offers students the opportunity to deepen their learning about cross-cultural interactions and understanding in their lives, their studies, and their work.  This course is typically taught In-Person at the Brampton Campus, Algoma University.
  2. Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. This course offers students the opportunity to learn about the values and principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion and how they must inform and guide our interactions with others.  This course is typically taught In-Person at the Brampton Campus, Algoma University.
  3. Turtle Island, Canada, and the World. This course provides students with an introduction to the story of Turtle Island/Canada prior to, and after first contact between Indigenous peoples and colonizers. This course is typically taught Virtually (Online).

Course content may be provided to the incoming instructor(s).

Part-Time Contract Faculty (PTCF) Qualifications

Qualified candidates should:

  • Have a PhD (or other degree/s as applicable) from an accredited university related to one of the course topics. Candidates close to completion will also be considered.
  • Have a record of accomplishment in research, scholarship and/or teaching in one of the applicable course areas.
  • Demonstrated potential for outstanding teaching contributions.
  • Ability to contribute to the academic life of the University.
  • Have an understanding and connection to the University's Special Mission.
  • Experience working with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) communities, and Indigenous worldviews, cultures, values, knowledge systems and research methodologies is an asset.
