Are you interested in contributing to the development of policy that promotes strong relationships with, and positive outcomes for, Indigenous peoples in Ontario? This would include research, analysis, and supporting critical policy work and engagement to advance Indigenous-led approaches to economic development, prosperity and wealth creation that respect the diversity of Indigenous communities and cultures. You would also be supporting work that would help ensure that broader provincial policies are fair, and equitable, and contribute to the well-being of Indigenous communities, including those related to justice, policing, housing and the building of food sovereignty.

The Ministry

The Ministry of Indigenous Affairs provides corporate Indigenous policy development, and management support, and negotiates and settles land claims. It also manages the Province's relationships with First Nations, Indigenous organizations (including Métis, Native women, Inuit and off-reserve) and the federal government. As the corporate lead on Indigenous affairs within the Ontario government, it provides Indigenous policy development and relationship expertise. It coordinates cross-ministry Indigenous policy initiatives and multi-lateral relationship processes. It is also responsible for the Aboriginal Policy Framework and other corporate coordination activities.


The Branch

The Strategic Planning and Economic Policy Branch is responsible for leading, and working with, its partners both internally and externally to advance the economic well-being of Indigenous communities, including through policy coordination, critical engagement, development and implementation of funding programs, and working with partner ministries on gaming, cannabis, tobacco policy, as well as Resource Revenue Sharing (RRS), justice and policing, water policy and climate change.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:


• undertake research and analysis in support of ministry priorities

• monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of new or changed policies and programs

• provide strategic and evidence-based advice on complex policy matters

• develop relationships and engage with Indigenous partners on policy development matters

• participate in consultations with other ministries and other levels of government

• prepare sensitive and confidential materials (e.g. briefing materials, position papers, option papers) that support the ministry's business and decision-making processes

How do I qualify?

Policy Development Skills:

• You can develop policy options and identify recommended approaches based on research and analysis

• You have strong project management skills to manage multiple priorities and policy projects in a fast-paced environment


Knowledge of Indigenous Peoples and Relevant Issues:

• You are familiar with Indigenous communities and organizations in Ontario, and their governance structures, priorities, issues and perspectives

• You have an understanding of the factors and issues impacting and influencing Indigenous policy development, including treaty relationships, Aboriginal and Treaty rights, and inter-governmental relations

• You are familiar with engagement protocols relevant to Indigenous peoples


Research and Analytical Skills:

• You can effectively conduct quantitative and qualitative research and analysis using a range of data sources

• You can evaluate proposed policies, programs, regulations and initiatives to ensure they are feasible and align with the government and Indigenous partner priorities

• You can track and analyze performance measures to evaluate the effectiveness of policies


Communication Skills:

• You can foster collaborative working relationships with internal staff, other ministries, other levels of government and Indigenous partners

• You have well developed presentation skills to proficiently deliver information to a variety of audiences

• You demonstrate written communication skills to prepare a variety of material (e.g. research reports, briefing notes, options papers, etc.)

• You can exercise tact and diplomacy to lead the resolution of sensitive policy development issues


Salary Range: $65,174 - $91,119 Per Year
