Job Summary

Under the direction of the Supervisor, Surveys and Inspections, the successful candidate will assist with the supervision of Surveys and Inspections staff and help manage the day to day operations of the Unit; which consists of 45 permanent unionized staff and approximately 25 temporary/seasonal staff.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assign and monitor work of the Surveys and Inspections staff on a daily basis
- Ensure provision of required safety and technical training for staff. The Assistant Supervisor may be directly responsible for providing some elements of the training
- Ensure that safety precautions are taken and that safety equipment is worn at all times
- Assist in identifying improvements to current processes and procedures, with a view of improving effectiveness, efficiency and customer service
- Assist in moving unit initiatives forward, such as documenting procedures and creating guidelines to improve the unit’s operations and performance
- Order adequate materials and field supplies for Surveys and Inspections staff
- Assist with site inspections and investigations, and provide follow-up as required
- Assist Supervisor with hiring recommendations, performance reviews and labour/employee issues
- Help develop long term objectives and career goals for each staff member in conjunction with the Supervisor
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders as required
- Represent the Surveys and Inspections Unit at various internal and external meetings including pre-construction meetings
- Act as Supervisor, Surveys and Inspections in their absence
- May be required to work shifts to support winter maintenance activities on a rotational standby basis, and available for 24-hour on-call emergencies
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Skills and Qualifications
- Must have successfully completed a College Civil Engineering Technology program and possess a C.Tech or C.E.T. designation with OACETT
- Must have a minimum of five years of progressive experience in the construction and maintenance of municipal services infrastructure
- Previous supervisory experience in a unionized environment is preferred
- Demonstrated ability to co-ordinate, direct and supervise the activities of staff
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills are required, as are excellent organizational, conflict resolution, and problem-solving abilities
- Must be committed to working in a team based environment with focus on continuous improvement through innovation and enhancement of processes
- Excellent time management skills to effectively prioritize and organize work to meet deadlines
- Ability to exercise independent judgement and make sound decisions
- Must act with integrity and demonstrate sound moral and ethical principles
- Proven ability to work with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders including the public
- Excellent computer skills with a proficiency using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and MS Outlook
- Able to read and interpret engineering drawings and contract documents
- Experienced with City of Mississauga and OPSS construction standards and specifications
- Good working knowledge and experience with INFOR Public Sector
- Demonstrated understanding and interpretation of collective agreements, Occupational Health & Safety Act, and City policies and procedures is an asset
- A valid Ontario Class 'G' driver's license and availability of personal vehicle
