Job Summary

The Active Transportation Technologist will be part of a team that actualizes the City’s vision for embedding cycling and pedestrian options of transportation for residents across Mississauga. This position will be key is utilizing best practices and technical skills to ensure that residents have safe options as they travel from “A” to “B”.

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager, Active Transportation, this position is responsible for:
• Delivering the implementation of cycling and pedestrian capital infrastructure programs, including providing the review of design drawings and technical guidance to design staff to ensure best practices are followed and the City’s strategic objectives for active transportation infrastructure are met;
• Preparing active transportation related comments for Traffic Management Plans, Draft Plans of Subdivisions, Site Plan Applications, and Property Acquisition and Encroachment Applications to ensure conformance with Provincial guidelines, best practices, and with the City’s Cycling and Pedestrian Master Plans;
• Providing technical expertise to support the City’s active transportation programs, which includes the monitoring of bike lane usage (temporary and established), Bike Parking, bike lane design, etc. This requires the collection and analysis of data
• Leading field investigations and preparing written responses related to service requests and inquiries from City Councillors and members of the public;
• Prepares correspondence, service requests and reports to Committee, Council, Councillors and the general public, related to active transportation;
• Management and inventory of existing AT assets including cycling network signage and pavement markings, and street furnishings including bicycle parking and benches;
• Preparation of work orders for signage and pavement markings in support of the City’s capital programs for cycling and pedestrian infrastructure; and
• Acting as an ambassador for Active Transportation while engaging with a variety of government related agencies, City departments, contractors, vendors and consultants concerning active transportation related items.

Skills and Qualifications

• Must have successfully completed a 3 year Technical College certificate program in Civil Engineering Technology, Transportation Engineering Technology or equivalent; along with a CET designation or equivalent;
• Minimum 3- years of experience municipal transportation infrastructure design and monitoring, with a focus on active transportation facilities preferred;
• Demonstrated knowledge of traffic engineering practices, the City’s Traffic by-law, the Highway Traffic Act, and other standards and guidelines as they relate to transportation;
• Demonstrated knowledge of current planning and design standards for active transportation facilities, including Ontario Traffic Manuals (Books 12A, 15 and 18);
• Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships in an environment where there are often competing priories;
• Demonstrated experience in project management, preparation and presentation of traffic management studies in a public forum time management and report writing is essential;
• Experience working in a municipal government environment is preferred;
• Demonstrated interest and knowledge in active transportation is an required;
• Good working knowledge of standard Microsoft Office Suite is required, as well as experience with CAD software (i.e., MicroStation or other traffic management applications) and file management tools are an asset; and
• Ability and means to travel to various sites within Mississauga is required.
