OCAD University (OCAD U) - Canada’s largest and oldest art and design post-secondary institution -invites nominations and applications for the position of Vice-President, Research & Dean, School of Graduate Studies.

 

Located on a 12-building campus in the heart of Toronto’s arts and cultural hub, OCAD University offers a vibrant and dynamic work and learning environment for more than 400 faculty and academic staff, more than 4,500 undergraduate students, and over 250 graduate students. OCAD U advances interdisciplinary art and design education and research grounded in liberal arts and science, and driven by leading-edge technologies, innovative teaching and professional practice. OCAD U faculty and student researchers engage in transformative research that invigorates its graduate labs, studios, and classrooms, and supports all forms of scholarship by students and faculty members in creative and professional practices in art, design, the social sciences, humanities, science, and technology. The university is home to four Canada Research Chairs. In addition to Tri-Council funded research, OCAD U leads inter-, trans- and post-disciplinary research. It is an exciting time to join OCAD U as the university moves forward with its seven priorities outlined in its six-year Academic and Strategic Plan (2022 – 28). This plan charts the course for OCAD U to drive positive impact and innovation in teaching, learning and scholarship. The Vice-President, Research & Dean, School of Graduate Studies is a member of OCAD U’s senior leadership team and reports jointly to the President and Vice-Chancellor, and the Vice-President, Academic & Provost. The Vice-President, Research & Dean, School of Graduate Studies is responsible for focusing the university’s emerging research capacity; effectively managing existing research activities; and providing strategic leadership to the development, implementation, and expansion of new research initiatives, including building up research capacity across all forms of research. The successful candidate will lead the educational and research leadership of Graduate Studies, diversify graduate student enrollment and faculty, expand existing graduate programs, and further new curricular directions.

 

The ideal candidate is an inspirational leader with significant educational leadership and administrative management experience gained within a research or graduate studies context, who possesses a PhD or relevant advanced or terminal degree, and is eligible for appointment with tenure to the senior ranks. The individual who realizes success in this role has a proven track record of teaching and research excellence with the ability to champion existing and future graduate programs; embraces new and innovative ways to advance OCAD U’s capacity for creating and disseminating research and scholarship; demonstrates leadership in implementing strategic priorities and initiatives to advance equity and sustainability; and supports OCAD U’s efforts to decolonize curriculum and reimagine pedagogy. The VP and Dean must have a collaborative, consultative, and transparent leadership style, exceptional interpersonal skills, and a visionary mindset.  A systems-view towards creative integration of organizational structures will position the next VP and Dean for success.
