Indigenous Education

The Faculty of Education of Memorial University of Newfoundland & Labrador invites applications for a tenure-track appointment in Indigenous Education, based at the St. John’s campus, beginning July 1, 2023, or shortly thereafter (subject to budgetary approval.) This is a targeted search for an Indigenous scholar. The competition is open to individuals who identify as Indigenous, as per approval granted by the Human Rights Commission pursuant to Section 8 of the Human Rights Act.

The work of the successful candidate will be divided primarily between teaching, research, and service in the area of Indigenous education. The candidate will maintain a research program, teach a combination of undergraduate and graduate courses, supervise graduate students, and work within the Faculty of Education to promote growth in meeting the TRC’s Calls to Action relating to Education.

As a Faculty, we support and encourage vigorous intellectual growth, excellence and innovation in teaching and research, as well as critical engagement in academic and professional communities. The Faculty of Education, in conjunction with Memorial’s Office of Indigenous Affairs, is undertaking institution-wide efforts to enhance existing Indigenous programs and courses, increase the number of Indigenous faculty, and develop new supports for Indigenous students. These efforts focus on Indigenous ways of knowing and doing and necessarily involve consultation and engagement with Indigenous communities, both within Memorial University and beyond.

The preferred candidate will possess a doctorate [or near completion of a doctorate] and a strong connection to Indigenous nations in the Atlantic or NL context. Those who demonstrate deep understanding of lived experiences with Indigenous knowledge systems, community-based practice, Indigenous language(s), and/or Indigenous education may be considered as possessing equivalent qualifications to a doctorate. Appointments are normally made at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.

Applicants are asked to submit a letter of application including a current curriculum vitae, and a complete portfolio which may include: a philosophical statement that reflects your beliefs on the ways knowledge is created and optimally shared, your teaching philosophy, examples of teaching materials where applicable, evidence of scholarship and related published works, exhibitions or other creative outputs, any peer-reviewed funding received, and any other materials deemed relevant to this call. Applicants should also provide a statement of self-identification and a letter confirming your connection to the Indigenous community/communities that support you. Finally, please include the names and contact information of three referees.
