The Department of Civil Engineering in the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary invites applications for a Tier I Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Environmental Prediction Systems for Water Sustainability. The Chair will be appointed at the rank of Professor (with tenure), they will bring a proven academic record of research excellence, impact and leadership. A successful candidate at the Full Professor level will demonstrate evidence of an outstanding track record of scholarly publications in high quality journals, evidence of securing ongoing external research funding, effectiveness in teaching, and evidence of excellent graduate student supervision. Evidence of established academic collaborations and engagement in professional and other communities is required.
The successful applicant will align with the University of Calgary’s Framework for Growth and support its strategic academic and research priorities of transdisciplinary scholarship, future-focused program delivery, and deeper community integration. The Chair will actively engage in university-wide transdisciplinary initiatives around water, such as One-Health, and will have a clear vision for research leadership that includes enhancing water related issues in Indigenous communities in alignment with ii’taa’poh’to’p. The Chair will actively contribute to research, teaching and curriculum development and student/postdoc supervision. It is expected they will take a leadership role within the Department, School and the University. Service to the University, profession and community is expected. As a member and leader of the university community, the Chair will support, and contribute to, equity, diversity and inclusion and foster a positive working and learning environment.
It is expected that the successful candidate will already possess a high-impact research program and will be a recognized international leader in the area of Environmental Prediction Systems for Water Sustainability as evidenced by high-quality scholarly output and research impact that demonstrates research leadership leading to peer-evaluated publications, securing of external research funding, active engagement with industry or equivalent stakeholders, and a track record of supervising and mentoring research students and personnel. A demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses on topics related to sustainable, environmental and/or water resource engineering is required. To be eligible for consideration candidates must hold a B.Sc. in Civil or Environmental Engineering (or equivalent degree) and a Ph.D. in Engineering or a closely related discipline. Candidates should be eligible to apply for registration as a professional engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
The mandate of the Chair will be to lead transformative research at the University of Calgary through integrating water and ecosystem prediction systems.
The Chair holder’s research will have a focus in one or more of the following areas with relevance to a water sustainability:
- Advancing process-based environmental modelling; Integrating environmental prediction systems across disciplines; and/or Risk-based decision making and communication.
The Chair will benefit from a rich ecosystem, which includes world-class engineering scholars, a focus on entrepreneurship and innovation, a strong indigenous strategy, and a university community that supports transdisciplinary research, partnerships and collaborations, and research and education excellence.
The Chair holder will also have a unique opportunity to engage with Advancing Canadian Wastewater Assets (ACWA). ACWA is an innovative partnership between the University of Calgary and the City of Calgary, as part of the Urban Alliance. Its goal is to advance water treatment technologies to address environmental and human health issues.
