Job Summary

Reporting to the Supervisors of Zoning Plans Examination, provide professional advice and recommendations to all levels of City staff, levels of government, affected agencies and departments, the public and all other stakeholders, tribunals and courts to guide the growth and development of the City of Mississauga.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, review, comment, coordinate and process planning and building development applications as they relate to zoning and land use compatibility and provide possible resolution measures for areas of deficiency.
  • Participate in or lead special studies on land use, zoning regulations and other development matters, if required.
  • Under take thorough research on trending planning, zoning and development topics, if required.
  • Undertake reviews to help keep the Zoning By-law current, in conformity with the Official Plan and reflective of legislative changes, if required.
  • Assist the Supervisor in providing high quality advice and technical guidance to staff to ensure consistency of service delivery and sufficiency of compliance.
  • Participate in staff training to ensure duties, responsibilities, goals and objectives are clearly defined, understood, and appropriate knowledge is maintained; make recommendations to Supervisor with respect to specific staff training requirements.
  • Monitor service delivery levels, policies, procedures and practices to ensure optimum efficiency and effectiveness; make recommendations to Supervisor as required to achieve service delivery excellence.
  • Monitor and ensure that Zoning forms, other Divisional forms, and Mississauga website information relating to the delivery of zoning services are maintained accurate and up-to-date.
  • Research and prepare technical reviews for proposed by-laws and other zoning related reports. Prepare written communication on behalf of the Supervisor and/or Manager when directed.
  • Provide advice with respect to implementing zoning by-laws.
  • Review zoning by-law amendments to implement City-initiated zoning reviews and special study area policies, if required.
  • Write reports, attend and make presentations to the Planning and Development Committee and City.
  • Council and attend and provide evidence at Local Planning Appeal Tribunal (LPAT) Hearings, when required, if required.
  • Liaise with applicants, Councillors, City staff and other parties.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned.


Skills and Qualifications

  • University Degree in Urban Planning or related discipline with a minimum of three years experience or a related post-secondary Degree or Diploma with a minimum of five years progressive targeted experience.
  • Membership in Ontario Professional Planners Institute and Canadian Institute of Planners is preferred.
  • Highly developed research, analytical, report writing, communication, organizational and project management skills are preferred.
  • Must have ability to travel and provide own transportation and be comfortable working flexible work hours
