Job Summary

The purpose of this position is to ensure the Corporation is compliant with all applicable regulations made under the Occupational Health and Safety Act to ensure protection and preservation of a safe and healthy workplace for all employees. This requires being aware of all additions/revisions to legislative requirements made under the Occupational Health and Safety Act as well as the ability to address the changes in an accurate and timely manner.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Design a framework that creates a strong and sustainable safety culture.
• Provide leadership direction, advice, assistance and guidance on all health and safety matters on a corporate basis.
• Provide guidance and support to a team of four (4) Professional and Administrative staff in order to provide technical and practical information and guidance on Health and Safety concerns, legislative compliance and Workplace Violence investigations throughout the Corporation.
• Play a key leadership role in ensuring the Corporation is compliant with all applicable regulations made under the Occupational Health & Safety Act, Industry Standards and best practices regarding health and safety
• Determine required training and ensure safety audits are conducted in order to identify and mitigate risks.
• Active member when the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) is activated and will interpret and monitor compliance with the Health and Safety management system and the Occupational Health and safety regulations and all other pertinent and relevant standards and legislation.
• Ensure all relevant safety metrics are collected, analyzed and communicated to relevant parties
• Recognise emerging trends and develop and recommend proactive strategies to reduce, eliminate or contain the risk.
• Actively participate in management decisions regarding Ministry of Labour Orders, visits and critical injury investigations and reporting.

Skills and Qualifications

• Post-Secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety
• Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC) Designation
• Minimum seven (7) years progressive experience within the Health and Safety field, at least three (3) at a supervisory/management level within a large corporation with diverse business services.
• Experience implementing evidence based programs designed to provide metrics and measures to evaluate successes and highlight areas requiring mitigation strategies.
• Ability to assess, design and conduct customized training programs in both unionized and non-unionized environments.
• Previous experience consulting and advising Joint Health and Safety Committees (JHSC) is required.
• Experience in Human Resources Management with strong investigation skills, including Workplace Violence is a requirement.
• Experience dealing with Ministry of Labour inspections and ensuing orders as well as knowledgeable with the Ministry of Transportation Driver Certification program is preferred
• Strong organizational skills are required as well as the ability to anticipate, recognize and respond to problem situations; must have excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills, especially strong writing skills.
• Experience managing a remote team.
• Use of own vehicle with an acceptable Drivers Licence Abstract is required.
