Job Summary

This Position is responsible for promoting safe vehicle and equipment operations in order to reduce collisions and maintenance while also improving driver confidence through the development and delivery of a comprehensive training and compliance program.

Duties and Responsibilities

Vehicle & Equipment Training Content Development
• Research, design, develop, and document vehicle and equipment training content for specialized fleet vehicles and equipment.
• Research and understand applicable legislation, manufacturer recommendations, and adult learning style, tools and techniques.

Legislative Review for Evolving Requirements
• Review applicable legislation for evolving requirements and interpret those changes as they apply to the City's fleet.
• Work with affected users to implement any necessary changes to ensure compliance for drivers and the City's operations.

Vehicle & Equipment Legislation Compliance
• Identify applicable legislation based on the variety and types of vehicles and equipment within the corporate fleet.
• Work with Corporate Fleet users to determine level of compliance.
• Drive follow-up actions to ensure compliance as required.

Corporate Policy Development
• Develop corporate policies related to vehicle and equipment training and compliance.
• Present to LT for approval, implement policy as required.

Compliance Training
• Reviews training programs for suitability to corporate requirements and department needs and ensures training is designed and presented in keeping with the learning principles of the audience
• Evaluate the current state of vehicle and equipment training and compliance across the organization to determine risk.
• Address highest risk areas first through the development and delivery of training
• Work with divisions to understand their needs for vehicle and equipment training to ensure appropriate training is provided in a cost-effective manner.
• Analyze telematics data to support the identification of risky driving behaviour and re-training
• needs.
• Liaise with Corporate Safety on training and collision issues, and Risk and Insurance on collisions or claims as a result of vehicle and equipment operations.

Team Management
• Recruit, evaluate, mentor, coach and provide day to day direction to vehicle and equipment trainers.
• Support decision making on internal versus external training delivery based on cost, need, expertise, certification, managing risk, etc.

Skills and Qualifications

• College Diploma with emphasis on adult education and learning principles and training program development or a related discipline required.
• Must have the following qualifications:
  • Certified Fleet Driver Trainer
  • Certified Airbrake instructor
  • Certified WHMIS instructor and
  • Certified Commercial Motor Vehicle Collision Investigator (Level 1 minimum).
