POSITION OVERVIEW

 

As an Applied ML Scientist - Health, you will provide technical leadership and contribute to focused research breakthroughs and applications to solve real-world health problems with machine learning and AI. You will provide guidance and work with some of the best and brightest data scientists and machine learning (ML) engineering staff from leading industry and health organizations. You will collaborate with some of the leading machine learning researchers, data scientists and AI engineering teams. Publishing research papers on applied research is a part of this role, but the greatest focus is on the impact of applications, not on the quantity or quality of publications. We are seeking a scientist with research experience in Responsible AI in a deep learning context. Experience in Fairness, Explainability, Privacy, AI Safety, Recommender Systems, and Natural Language Processing are all valuable areas of knowledge for this role. This position is an individual contribution position and focused on providing technical leadership in implementation focused applied ML in health settings.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead research and implementation of varied machine learning and deep learning techniques in the health domain; Work in collaboration with Vector’s Health team, and health sector partners to identify challenges in the health domain that can be solved using advanced ML techniques such as NLP, Computer Vision, Generative Models etc.; Provide technical guidance to AI Engineering team members and lead delivery of applied ML projects in health; Provide scientific advice regarding overall machine learning application strategies and roadmaps for the health domain; Work in collaboration with Researchers, Machine learning specialists, and Vector affiliates to build demos, minimum viable products (MVP), reference implementations, and prototypes; Provide scientific oversight for Vector-led or co-led efforts to prepare and present machine learning research in the health domain; Serve as the lead Vector scientific contributor for health, including contributing to or leading the authoring of peer-reviewed research papers; Contribute to training sessions and other initiatives for Vector’s professional staff and stakeholders that help increase AI knowledge and capacity of the health system to recognize and act on opportunities to apply machine learning; Serve as an expert and facilitate identification of experts among Vector’s research community for external stakeholders to advise on machine learning research trends and applications; Perform other functions as required e.g., providing scientific advice and technical support to other members of Vector’s leadership team and corporate projects led by Vector.

 

PROFILE OF IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • PhD degree in computer science or computer engineering with a research focus on machine learning required; Demonstrated expertise in one or more of: ML for health, Explainable AI, AI Safety, privacy for AI/ML, AI governance, Nature Language Processing (NLP), Natural Language Understanding and generation; Demonstrated experience applying machine learning research to novel problems and data sets; Experience with software engineering and/or data engineering is considered an asset; Strong knowledge and experience of Python; Experience with parameter and architecture tuning of deep learning algorithms; Experience using open source deep learning software frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, Tensorflow, JAX); and, Experience with recommendation systems is considered an asset.

 

KEY SUCCESS MEASURES

  • Vector is successful in implementing its health strategy (including the strategic goal to support the widespread application of Health AI) and the industry sponsor retention strategy Stakeholders that would otherwise be unable to utilize machine learning techniques are supported in identifying problems amenable to AI, and in utilizing machine learning Following interactions with the Vector team, external stakeholders are positioned to perform, or secure external resources to perform, their own machine learning deployment independent of direct Vector involvement
