Coordinate natural heritage restoration, stewardship and outreach projects in City parks and natural areas to improve the health and sustainability of our local environment with multiple partners and stakeholders.Duties and Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Supervisor, Woodlands and Natural Areas:
Skills and Qualifications
- Responsible for developing and implementing Conservation Management Plans or Restoration Plans for City-owned natural areas and woodlands;
- Coordinate implementation of natural area restoration projects (terrestrial, wetland, aquatic);
- Develop procurements and administer contracts for ecosystem restoration;
- Coordinate events and volunteers to further natural area restoration initiatives;
- Provide technical expertise regarding Species at Risk and significant/sensitive ecosystem community types (e.g., prairie, wetland) and implement projects to protect and manage the health of these significant features Supports the monitoring, tracking and reporting on the state of the City’s natural areas and woodlands;
- Enhance and expand the natural areas and urban forest through review of potential expansion areas;
- Work with conservation authorities to integrate and implement strategies and plans;
- Explore opportunities to support implementation of strategic actions plans for aquatic and shoreline areas;
- Provide education and training for internal staff on natural heritage and urban forest issues as well as for the community in order to improve and maintain awareness about the natural heritage system and urban forest;
- Central point of contact to provide increased collaboration between departments, divisions and sections to provide technical expertise with the involvement of City forestry staff in information sharing related to natural areas;
- Write and review grant applications for new project funding;
- Coordinate and implement wildlife and vegetation monitoring;
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Post-Secondary education in Environmental Science, Ecology, Urban Forestry, Forest Ecology, Botany, Ecosystem Restoration or related discipline.
- Minimum 3-5 years related experience in ecosystem management, including a strong background in Ecology and Natural Heritage Management.
- Demonstrated a strong understanding of Federal, Provincial and Conservation Authority Planning Regulations and Processes with respect to Species at Risk and significant/sensitive ecosystems.
- Ability to interpret engineering and landscape drawings, aerial photos and GIS generated maps.
- Demonstrated project management experience.
- Demonstrated experience in woodland conservation management and ecosystem restoration.
- Demonstrated experience in biological field data collection, analysis/interpretation and presentation.
- Demonstrated experience in contract procurement and administration.
- Strong knowledge of southern Ontario trees, shrubs and ground covers.
- Experience related to community based restoration projects.
- Experience managing and directing staff, consultants/contractors and volunteers.
- Knowledge of group dynamics and team building.
- Advanced communication, customer service, and presentation skills.
- Strong organizational, time management and planning skills.
- Proficiency in the use of computer applications; i.e. MS Office, Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint.
- Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision.
- International Society of Arboriculture certification or eligibility for certification.
- The following items would be considered assets:
- Training or certification in Ecological Land Classification for Southern Ontario
- Training or certification in Ontario Wetland Evaluation System - Southern Manual
- Ability to operate a commercial vehicle and trailer
- Must possess a valid Ontario Class G driver’s license and have access to a vehicle.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends when needed.
Hourly Rate/Salary:$ 74,817.00 - $ 99,758.00
