The Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine, Department of Pediatrics at The University of British Columbia (UBC), located at BC Children’s Hospital invites applications for the BC Children’s Hospital Professorship in Pediatric Medicine at UBC, open to qualified applicants to be appointed at the rank of Professor (tenure).

The Department of Pediatrics of the University of British Columbia, British Columbia Children’s Hospital, and Sunny Hill Health Centre is one of the largest Pediatric Departments in Canada. Our collaborative team of physicians, scientists, allied health professionals and administrative staff are dedicated to providing leadership and excellence in: Patient Care, Education, Research and Child Health Advocacy. The Department of Pediatrics strives to be a cohesive academic and professional body committed to the advancement of child health through the delivery of exemplary care, teaching and research. We recognize that the enhancement of our Department requires active collaboration and integration with the UBC Faculty of Medicine, associated hospitals, research organizations, and our various stakeholders. The Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine is one of the largest Divisions, with 26 faculty members. The Division covers different areas, including inpatient wards, complex care, Child Protection Unit and Social Pediatrics. The Division is involved with various research projects including social pediatrics, asthma, UTI and RSV infections. The Division is also involved in various quality improvement projects.


The BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute (BCCHR) is a partnership of UBC and the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) whose programs include BC Children’s Hospital, Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children and the BC Women’s Hospital and Health Centre. The BCCHR is dedicated to high quality research spanning a wide range of concerns relevant to children’s and family health.
The Professorship is partly funded and supported by endowment funds from the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. Objectives of the Professorship are:
• To develop and support a well-structured research program to further elevate the division into a world-class pediatric hospital medicine site;
• Provide research mentorship to early and mid-career faculty and trainees, within the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine;
• Inspire the next generation of trainees and faculty in their own research endeavours;
• Work collaboratively with other clinicians and scientists to develop and lead the Pediatric Hospital Medicine research portfolio with a focus on the common conditions in children that are hospitalized, and challenges of different populations situated throughout the various regions of British Columbia;
• Further develop and expand the Pediatric Hospitalist Medicine multi-center trials unit into national clinical trials super-hub.
Reporting to the Head of the UBC Department of Pediatrics, the incumbent will be a senior-level clinician-scientist with a well-established research program in Pediatric Hospitalist Medicine who can develop new and complement
the current areas of focus and research methodologies, in particular a national and international expansion of clinical trials networks in pediatric hospital medicine. They will forge productive collaborations with other members of the division and the BCCHR. The appointee will be expected to mentor early and mid-level career faculty in research, participate in the teaching activities of the Department, as well as provide mentorship and training to undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate learners.

The successful candidate will hold an MD and have completed relevant training in Pediatrics with expertise in Pediatrics Hospital Medicine clinical trials. The successful candidate will be qualified to practice as a General Pediatrician consultant and be eligible to obtain a specialist’s license to practice in British Columbia. As a Professor, the successful candidate will have demonstrated appropriate standards of excellence in teaching, have received wide recognition in their sustained and productive scholarly activity, and participated significantly in academic and professional affairs. The successful candidate will also have demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and interact with empathy, understanding and, respect of diverse and divergent perspectives and behaviors. In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate a willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own, and a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

This position is located within a health-care facility. Therefore, this position requires successful verification of full vaccination against Covid-19 provided prior to the start date, as required by the provincial health mandate.

The expected salary for this position is $200,000 to $256,000 per annum.
