Duties and Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Manager, Traffic Planning, the Traffic Planning Technologist will be required to:
- Prepare transportation related comments for Official Plan Amendments, Rezoning Applications, Draft Plans of Subdivisions / Condominiums, Site Plan Applications, Committee of Adjustment and Land Division Applications, and Property Acquisition and Encroachment Applications
- Review and provide comments on external traffic impact studies
- Prepare and review preliminary road design drawings as necessary to support development applications
- Provide detailed terms of reference for external traffic impact studies
- Provide transportation input into the preparation of the capital programming, project planning and preliminary design for the Major Roads and Intersection Improvement programs
- Represent the Transportation Infrastructure Management section during internal and external land development meetings, including meetings with developers and their consultants, as required
- Respond to requests from members of Council, internal and external clients and the general public on transportation and traffic planning related issues
- Liaise with internal staff and external agencies on the preparation of transportation comments and attend evening public and community meetings pertaining to development applications and City projects as required
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Skills and Qualifications
- Post-secondary graduate from a recognized university with a degree in Civil, Transportation or a related engineering program and a registered P.Eng. designation in good standing with the PEO (or eligibility), or a post-secondary graduate from a recognized college in Civil or Transportation Engineering Technology or a related applied science technology program with a registered C.E.T. designation in good standing with OACETT (or eligibility).
- 3-5 years ofdirect municipal experience in the traffic / transportation planning field is preferred.
- A good understanding of the municipal planning process, engineering standards, field-related resource materials (ITE, HCM, OTM and TAC manuals) and transportation software programs (micro-simulation software such as Synchro and VISSIM).
- Sound judgement and ability to carry out work assignments independently and as part of a divisional team.
- Good verbal and written communication skills to assist in the preparation of reports and comments, and to interact with various internal departments as well as members of Council, external agencies, consultants and developers in a tactful and politically sensitive manner.
- Ability to represent the Transportation Infrastructure Management section at public and community meetings.
- A good working knowledge of standard computer software (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Must be able to provide own transportation options to attend off-site meetings at various locations within the City of Mississauga.
