As part of the Inclusive Excellence Hiring Initiative at the University of Calgary, the Werklund School of Education invites applications for an Indigenous scholar in Education at the rank of Assistant Professor (Tenure-track) or Associate Professor (With Tenure):

 

The successful candidate in leadership, policy and governance will critically examine educational policies and/or advance school leadership practices to embed Indigenous ways of knowing, being, doing, and connecting in keeping with provincial leadership quality standards. This position is only open to qualified Indigenous scholars (First Nations [Status, Non-Status], Métis, or Inuit). Candidates will be required to provide verifiable evidence of their Indigenous identity.

 

This position provides an opportunity for outstanding researchers to establish, develop, and maintain active research programs in their disciplines by exploring and utilizing Indigenous research methodologies, knowledge, values, and cultures to contribute to creating conditions for Indigenous children and youth to flourish. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to attract competitive research funding to implement innovative and socially significant research programs within a dynamic and collaborative environment.

 

The successful candidate will have strong relational commitments to students and Indigenous communities.  They will supervise graduate students, teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in their areas of specialization and demonstrate leadership in service, collaboration and mentorship within the University and the community.

 

The successful candidate will become part of a collaborative community across the University of Calgary including, but not limited to, the UCalgary Circle of Advisors, Elders, the Taylor Institute, and the Vice-Provost (Indigenous Engagement) team. As well, the Circle of Indigenous Scholars within the University Calgary supports Indigenous scholars individually and collectively. The Circle provides opportunity for scholars to gather to address matters that are important to them, the Indigenous communities on campus, and wider Indigenous communities. As a circle, it provides peer connections and support to all participating scholars.

 

Together in a Good Way: A Journey of Transformation and Renewal

 

In the spring of 2016, The UCalgary set out to build the Indigenous Strategy (ii’ taa’poh’to’p) by gathering stories and perspectives from Traditional Knowledge Keepers, cultural advisors, agencies, and communities. The strategy was adopted in November 2017 with a foundation in transformation, renewal, and shared ethical space. ii’ taa’poh’to’p guides UCalgary on its path of transformation, and communicates its commitment and responsibility for truth and reconciliation. The strategy is and will remain a living document within the institution, whereby progress will be monitored, and content and direction will be renewed through a process of evaluation and evolution.

 

 

 

Over the past decade, the Werklund School of Education has purposely created a community of Indigenous scholars as part of our commitment towards reconciliation and Indigenization. There is a continued need to shift the curriculum and embed inclusive spaces in our school and communities for current and future educational leaders. The successful applicant would be joining a cohort that has garnered respect among the among the First Peoples of this province by supporting educators and leaders to authentically weave Indigenous ways of knowing, being, doing and connecting into the daily experience of children and youth in schools.

 

Application Details

 

Candidates will have a doctorate, preferably in education; a deep knowledge of Indigeneity, Indigenous communities, and Indigenous research methodologies; and research experience in education. Applicants should have a strong record of Indigenous community engagement and an emerging, externally funded research program. Preference will be given to candidates who have evidence of collaboration with schools and communities and professional experience in K-12 teaching or leadership.

 

The successful candidate at the assistant professor level will show an emerging track record of publications in high quality journals, securing external research funding, and effectiveness in teaching at the University level.

 

The successful candidate at the associate professor level must demonstrate evidence of a strong track record of publications in high quality journals, evidence of securing ongoing external research funding, effectiveness in teaching at the University level, and evidence of effective graduate student supervision.

The successful applicant will have:

A doctorate in Education (or related discipline); A strong record of research and knowledge mobilization (commensurate with rank); A proven ability to obtain research funding commensurate with rank; Demonstrated capability in graduate-level teaching, graduate student supervision; Demonstrated capability in teaching in areas of discipline; Experience in online teaching; and, Engagement with local, national, and international professional and other communities (commensurate with rank).
