INDIGENOUS WORKS (IW HRD)

Indigenous Works (IW), formerly the Aboriginal Human Resource Council, is an ISO-certified national Indigenous not-for-profit organization. As a recommendation of the 1996 Report on the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, IW was founded in 1998 with the mandate to increase Indigenous engagement and employment in the Canadian economy.

Indigenous Works is the operating name for Indigenous Works Organization Inc. IW Human Resource Development is focused is on Indigenous human resource development, workplace inclusion, and working with employers to develop employment opportunities for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Peoples.

For over 25 years, IW has worked with companies and organizations to strengthen their performance and results in Indigenous employment, workplace engagement, and inclusion. Building partnerships and growing the membership base are key strategies to achieve our mandate and mission.

THE SENIOR LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITY

This management opportunity will be of interest to leaders who wish to expand IW’s Indigenous workplace inclusion brand and program excellence to have a greater impact in the human resource, organization development, DEI and ESG domains in Canada creating more employment and engagement opportunities for Indigenous People.

This is your opportunity to play an important role in Indigenous Works’ next stage of growth and to better empower and employ First Nations, Métis and Inuit participation in the Canadian economy. To achieve this, the executive director is responsible for growing IW’s Employer Partner membership program, its Employer of Choice Certification Program and the various training, consulting, job board and other services developed by IW to increase members’ and other clients’ workplace inclusion performance outcomes.

Together with IW’s team of staff and consultants, you will work to advance and benchmark workplace inclusion efforts, and help companies become employers-of-choice for Indigenous people. Using IW’s ‘system approaches and models’ the Executive Director will direct and coordinate people and programs to ensure we are helping our IW members advance their know-how and organizational competencies to develop, measure, and improve Indigenous employment and workplace inclusion performance.

IW has an ‘executive mentorship and stewardship program’ for aspiring Indigenous management executives who are seeking to take the next step on the national stage with an Indigenous organization.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Executive Director has three primary areas of responsibility.

  1. Membership and partnership development, growth and fulfilment;
  2. Overseeing the design and development of revenue-generating programs and services for employer partners and other clients;
  3. Directing and attaining high operational standards, organization performance, and reputational leadership role in Canada and abroad.

MEMBERSHIPS & PARTNERSHIPS 

  • Develop the annual membership value offer and prepare promotional and sales materials.
  • Develop and deliver an annual sales plan which increases membership.
  • Develop engagement and marketing plans for strategic target sectors e.g., healthcare, public sector, extraction industries, communications, financial services, etc.
  • Develop “smart” engagements using digital and web-based tools to accelerate membership development;
  • Develop prospects lists as well as forecast plans and business modeling for membership and other program sales.
  • Develop online and social media marketing strategies.
  • Develop systems and protocols to build and sustain partner relations.
  • Identify, develop, and maintain channel partnerships with other organizations and membership programs.

PROGRAM LEADERSHIP

  • Manage a comprehensive and integrated fulfilment strategy for members.
  • Direct and manage all members’ programs including but not limited to diagnostic and certification programming, training, consulting, knowledge tools, job board, forums, management learning events and others.
  • Support members and partners to maximize their value in the product and service offers.
  • Work with senior management to continually improve our partner relation activities and ensure strong relationships are maintained.
  • Develop fee for service programs for Employer Partners and other clients in alignment with revenue targets and membership growth targets.
  • Develop projects and initiatives that create revenue and funding support for IW (proposals and funding applications, affinity programs, sponsorship and others).
  • Identify opportunities for Employer Partner members and EP Inclusion Champions to align their sponsorship funds with IW program activities.
  • Support the members and partners to maximize value, benefits, and opportunities.
  • Monitor and maintain the relationships between the members, partners, and stakeholder organizations.
  • Develop new partnership channels to grow the membership program and services.

ORGANIZATIONAL PERFORMANCE 

  • Develop program budgets and forecasts.
  • Monitor and measure the efficacy of the members program and services.
  • Develop appropriate reporting mechanisms.
  • Produce an annual report.
  • Work with CFO on financial performance measure, progress and forecasts.
  • Meet at regular intervals with an advisory team and/or board of directors, prepare briefings and updates, as needed.
  • Supervise employees and project staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Training 

  • Post-secondary degree in human resources, organizational development, business or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Professional designation such as Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) or Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) or related human resources professional designation/certification will be an asset.

Experience and Abilities

  • Management experience in service-based organizations.
  • Experience in human resources within culturally diverse Indigenous and settler environments.
  • Experience in developing and growing membership-based organizations.
  • Previous experience successfully managing organizational growth and development with associated product and service development and implementation.
  • Familiarity with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities in Canada is essential.
  • Proven experience working with Indigenous clients, communities, organizations, and stakeholders.
  • Thorough understanding and experience of project management and planning processes along with their implementation.
  • Experience working effectively with senior level professionals throughout varied industries and sectors.
  • Public speaking and presentation acumen
  • Skills and experience in directing client-focused consulting projects and deliverables.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven experience working in a virtual work environment will be considered an asset.
  • Flexibility to travel, work from home and/or work irregular hours, as required.
  • Establish and maintain structured internal communication channels between other program support positions, ensuring timelines and protocols are consistently met either working independently or on a team-based basis.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal and management skills, combined with the ability to work independently in a high impact and multi-task environment, daily.

Workplace 

  • You will work in a virtual environment from your home-based office.
  • Experience with online communication tools, platforms and system is needed.
  • Experience with social media is an asset.

REPORTING:

The IW-HRD Executive Director will work closely with, and have two direct program reports, to the Senior VP of Strategy & Innovation and the Chief Finance and Business Officer. You will report on all facets including, but not limited to, the Membership program, Employer of Choice Program, Inclusion Works and the IW-HRD programs and services.

Indigenous Works Org has a President/CEO that reports to the IW board on three operating divisions: IW-HRD, Luminary and Kocihta.

Remuneration Range: (100K – 130K)

This is a full-time position with a compensation package that is commensurate with your experience and qualifications. This position will be attractive to Indigenous leaders who are seeking a new national challenge supported by a team of senior leaders who will provide mentorship and stewardship support.

As a national Indigenous organization advocates for greater representation of Indigenous people in C-Suite positions. Strong preference will be given to the hiring of an applicant who identifies as First Nation, Métis or Inuit.
