Job Summary
Mississauga’s City Planning Strategies Division is looking for a Planning and GIS Researcher to strengthen our growing data and analytics practice. We are seeking candidates who are curious and passionate about data, can balance multiple priorities, collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams and apply analytical thinking and geospatial solutions to work through complex planning problems.
The successful candidate will support corporate planning and development data and analytics by visualizing data, developing and maintaining databases, helping prepare population and employment forecasts, supporting the creation of geographical information system (GIS) web applications and responding to requests for information. Extensive computer and software use including databases, spreadsheets, presentation, office and GIS software (both desktop and web based) is required.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Creates and maintains datasets and spatial layers, documentation, and inventories related to land uses, demographics, development activity, employment, and socio-economic indicators
- Prepare GIS web applications, maps and dashboards using ESRI products to communicate planning information
- Assist in the administration of the annual Mississauga Employment Survey
- Assist with the preparation of City Growth Forecasts (population, housing and employment)
- Prepare presentation material and information brochures / layout / infographicsand present outcomes to staff, City’s Leadership and Council
- Contribute to the city's open data initiatives
- Analyze complex spatial and tabular data to support research activities
- Analyze Census data and other demographic, economic, and socio-economic indicators
- Respond to GIS requests and prepare custom data/information as requested for internal and external groups, ensuring accuracy and data quality
- Provide information for public and private interests by receiving and responding to data requests
- Provide City Planning Data Hub administration and updates with the aim to increase data literacy
- Design and develop website content related to land use planning
- Comply with relevant City policies
- Provide assistance on planning projects/initiatives within the unit/team
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Skills and Qualifications
- Post-secondary/university degree in Geography, Urban Planning, Geomatics, Geographical Information Systems, or related discipline with a GIS/database management focus
- 2 years of professional experience in a GIS,spatial data analysis, geomatics, or land use planning role
- Experience with ESRI suite of products including ArcGIS Pro and extensions and ArcGIS Onlineis required
- Experience with data analytical softwaresuch as Excel, Power BI and Tableau, and with MS Office suite is a definite asset
- Familiarity with database design, management, and SQL or equivalent
- Familiarity with 3D Visualization using ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Urban, or City Engine
- Experience interpreting statistical data, development plans, air photos, environmental information is an asset
- Experience working in the field of land use planning and/or with Ontario’s land use planning and demographic data sets (e.g., MPAC, Census, zoning by-law, Official Plan, etc.) is an asset
- Must be willing to learn new types of software regularly
- Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Advanced time management and organizational skills, with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple requests
- Experience leading research tasks is an asset
- Communication skills to obtain, clarify, and provide information andpresent results in plain language
- Ability to work cooperatively with others in a multi-disciplinary team in a rapidly changing environment
- Membership or eligibility for membership with the Ontario Professional Planners Institute is an asset
