YOUR ROLE
Reporting to the National Director, Feature Films – English Market, and collaborating with the National Director, Feature Films - French Market, the incumbent is responsible for Telefilm’s Production and Development Indigenous Stream funding decisions. They will also be the key advisor for all other Program decision makers when indigenous content or creators are involved using their expertise and the existing Indigenous Pathways and Protocols. The person will also be a content analyst on non-Indigenous projects when required.
This individual will nurture emerging and established Indigenous talent encouraging creative, competitive and viable applications in our Production and Development Programs. They will collaborate with internal and external partners to build stronger pathways and supports for national collaborations and international Indigenous co-productions. Using data, they will identify training gaps and resources, making recommendations to better support and advance Indigenous creators in both city centers and in more isolated Indigenous communities. This person should be eager to work within both the English and French Markets, with an understanding of market differences, even if not fluent in both languages. They will also contribute to meeting Telefilm’s engagements with Official Minority Language Communities.
This person will chair Telefilm’s Indigenous Advisory Committee and help Indigenous creators and producers navigate effectively through the organizations, learn about programs, and connect with appropriate personnel. The person will be a spokesperson for Telefilm at industry events nationally and internationally.
Expert-advisor
• Collaborate with internal and external partners to deliver actions as set out in Telefilm’s reconciliation plan;
• Evaluate community engagement plans submitted by production teams and advising decisionmakers on whether or not the teams have viable plan/expertise for engaging Indigenous communities and following Indigenous protocols;
• Maintain and develop collaboration and where possible alignment with CMF and ISO programs, collaborate in the development of guidelines, initiatives, and other special projects involving the audiovisual sector and Indigenous communities;
• Through consultations develop strategies to advance Indigenous creators within Telefilm’s programs and initiatives.
Content Analysis
• Assess the creative content of development and production funding applications;
• Screen film rough cuts and final cuts and provide comments/feedback;
• Screen applicants’ previous films and assess the track record of producers, writers and directors.
SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS
• Experience in the film and television industry in the development of feature film scripts and a solid understanding of feature film-financing, strongly encouraged;
• Diploma in a related field or any other related discipline or combination of equivalent and relevant experience;
• Ability to analyze data for trends and gaps to influence strategies and collaboration with external partners;
• Experience in project management, client service and processes.
• Written and verbal communication skills in English. A knowledge of French is an asset as the role will be responsible decision and community outreach for both linguistic markets.
